Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Gopal is characterized by a dynamic, tactically alert, and highly calculating style, frequently demonstrating defensive tenacity and strategic pragmatism. He is comfortable entering complex, double-edged positions, particularly those arising from sharp Sicilian lines.
A notable aspect of his middlegame play is his willingness to use exchange sacrifices to seize positional control or exploit weakened square complexes. For instance, in his notable game against Hikaru Nakamura at the 2017 Gibraltar Masters, Gopal sacrificed the exchange on move 15 in a Sicilian Najdorf to exploit the opponent's weakened light squares, securing a draw. His treatment of king safety is pragmatic; he is adept at navigating both opposite-side castling situations and king hunts.
In structurally unbalanced middlegames, Gopal regularly plays with the bishop pair and is highly competent in handling isolated queen pawn (IQP) structures, both as the attacking and defending side. In the transition to the endgame, he possesses strong technical conversion skills. He is highly effective in minor piece endgames and rook endgames, demonstrating a capability to grind down opponents in queenless middlegames or minor-piece-plus-pawn endgames.
