Overview

Haowen Xue (also known as Xue Haowen) is a Chinese grandmaster born on November 27, 2008, in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. Representing the Chinese Chess Federation (CHN), Xue is a prominent teenage prodigy who reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2553 in September 2025. He gained international recognition as an untitled junior by achieving elite-level tournament results on the European circuit, ultimately bypassing the International Master (IM) title entirely to qualify directly for the Grandmaster (GM) title in early 2025.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Xue grew up in Shenzhen and began playing chess at the age of six in 2014. He received early chess training under the guidance of Chinese GM Zeng Chongsheng.

Xue's international breakthrough occurred at the 2023 Dubai Open Chess Tournament. Entering the tournament as an untitled player rated 2335, he finished in eighth place overall, scoring 6 points out of 9 rounds against an elite field. During the event, Xue defeated four grandmasters: Artem Chernobay, David Gavrilescu, Mikheil Mchedlishvili, and Hans Niemann. His victory over Niemann with the black pieces—featuring a critical rook sacrifice—drew widespread attention. Xue concluded the event with a tournament performance rating of 2709, gaining 84.4 Elo points and securing his first GM norm.

In July 2024, Xue won the Arona Open in Tenerife, Spain. Seeded 29th at the start of the tournament, he finished undefeated with a score of 8/10 points and an Elo performance rating of 2677, capturing his second GM norm. Immediately following this success, he competed in the 57th Biel Chess Festival, where he finished seventh in the Master Tournament (MTO) with 7/10 points and took second place in the Biel Blitz Tournament (BTZ).

Xue secured his third and final GM norm by winning the 98th Hastings International Chess Congress outright. Held from December 28, 2024, to January 3, 2025, Xue completed the Swiss open undefeated with 7/9 points, finishing half a point ahead of runners-up GM Pengxiang Zhang and GM Pierre Laurent-Paoli. At 16 years and two months of age, Xue broke Judit Polgar's 1992–1993 record to become the youngest-ever winner of the historic Hastings Masters. Having met the 2500 FIDE rating requirement, he was officially awarded the Grandmaster title in early 2025.

In domestic competitions, Xue has also demonstrated high-level rapid capabilities, famously eliminating Chinese super-grandmasters Bu Xiangzhi and Li Chao in matches during the Chinese Rapid Championship.

• FIDE World Youth U16 Olympiad (2023): Represented China on Board 1 in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Xue scored an undefeated 7/9 points (+5 =4 -0), leading the Chinese national team to a gold medal victory.
• FIDE Online Chess Olympiad (2021): Represented the host Shenzhen team, playing in Division 2 and helping the squad advance to Pool B of the Top Division, securing a top-16 finish overall.

Despite his dynamic potential, Xue is structurally disciplined and highly patient in positional maneuvering. He handles space advantages systematically, slowly choking opponent counterplay. Defensively, he shows high tenacity, holding passive or slightly worse endgames and showing proficiency in fortress construction. His technical endgame conversion is precise, particularly in converting queenless middlegames and grinding out minor advantages using active king safety and queenside pawn-majority expansion.
