Biography & Major Career Milestones
Jakub Seemann developed through the Polish youth chess infrastructure, quickly establishing himself as one of Europe's top junior prospects. His rise was marked by outstanding performances in international youth championships. In September 2023, he competed in the European Youth Chess Championship in Mamaia, Romania, where he claimed the gold medal in the Under-16 category with a score of 7.5/9, finishing ahead of Spain's Diego Macias Pino and the Czech Republic's Jachym German. Two months later, in November 2023, Seemann secured the gold medal in the Under-16 section of the World Youth Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy, finishing with a clear first-place score of 9.5/11. This victory made him the first Polish junior to complete the European and World Championship double in the same year since Radosław Wojtaszek in 2004. Upon his return to Poland, video footage of him receiving a standing ovation from classmates at High School No. 3 in Zabrze went viral.
Seemann earned his International Master (IM) title in 2023, with norms achieved at events including the Sparkassen Chess Trophy in Dortmund, Germany. He continued to progress rapidly toward the Grandmaster title. In July 2025, Seemann secured his third and final GM norm with a round to spare at the 2nd Dole Trophy Pasino Grand Aix Masters in Aix-en-Provence, France. He finished the tournament on 6.5/9, securing the final norm after an 18-move draw against Ukrainian GM Pavel Eljanov in the eighth round.
Later in 2025, Seemann transitioned to Under-18 competition. In October 2025, he tied for first place in the Under-18 section of the World Youth Chess Championship in Florianópolis, Brazil, alongside Siddharth Jagadeesh, Artiom Stribuk, and Sriram Adarsh Uppala, ultimately placing fourth after tiebreaks. In March 2026, Seemann tied for first place at the Budapest Spring Festival with a score of 7/9, sharing the top spot with Daniel Dardha and Saidakbar Saydaliev.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Seemann exhibits a pragmatically concrete style, typical of computer-era junior players. His game is defined by solid positional understanding combined with precise calculation.
A notable strength of Seemann’s play is his refined endgame technique, particularly in converting micro-advantages. During his 2023 World Under-16 Championship run, he demonstrated exemplary technical execution in rook-and-pawn endings, notably converting an extra pawn into a victory against German FM Leonardo Costa in a critical round 8 encounter.
He also possesses strong defensive resilience and a high level of composure in complex, queenless middlegames. At the European Individual Chess Championship in April 2026, Seemann demonstrated his technical tenacity in a grueling encounter against veteran grandmaster Vasyl Ivanchuk. In a queenless middlegame that transitioned into a delicate endgame, Seemann pressed aggressively for a win after securing an extra pawn, showcasing his lack of deference to elite opposition and his readiness to play long, technical endings.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Seemann primarily relies on a mixture of 1.e4 and flank systems such as 1.Nf3 and 1.b3. Against the Sicilian Defense, his primary weapons are anti-Sicilian setups, specifically the Rossolimo and Canal-Sokolsky Attacks, which steer the game toward solid, strategic lines. He also implements Catalan and English systems.
