Overview
Leon Livaić (born October 16, 2000) is a Croatian chess Grandmaster representing the Croatian federation (CRO). Awarded the Grandmaster title in 2022, Livaić is a prominent figure in Croatian chess, having previously achieved the FIDE Master title in 2015 and the International Master title in 2017. He reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2591 in April 2023. Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Zagreb, Livaić was introduced to chess at the age of three by his father and played his first rated tournament at age six. He progressed rapidly through the national youth ranks, dominating multiple national youth championships and earning his FIDE Master title in 2015 at age 15.
In 2017, Livaić enjoyed a breakthrough year in junior and rapid chess. He finished fourth in the European Youth Chess Championship, became the European Rapid Youth Champion, won the bronze medal in the European Youth Blitz Championship, and capped off the year by winning the World Rapid Youth Championship in December. During this period, he also secured the youngest International Master title in the history of Croatian chess.
In 2019, Livaić briefly reduced his over-the-board activity to study Chemistry at the University of Zagreb, but returned to consistent competition shortly after. He finished third in the 2021 Croatian Chess Championship, finishing behind Grandmasters Zdenko Kožul and Ivan Šarić.
Livaić fulfilled his remaining Grandmaster title requirements in 2022, scoring his final grandmaster norm in the Austrian Bundesliga to officially receive the GM title. In April 2023, he tied for second place in the Reykjavik Open with a score of 7/9, finishing alongside GMs Mustafa Yılmaz, Abhijeet Gupta, Maxime Lagarde, Gabor Papp, Matthieu Cornette, and Tamás Bánusz, which propelled his rating to a career-peak of 2591. In December 2023, Livaić won the Croatian Chess Championship in Zagreb, finishing undefeated with 8.5/11 to claim the national title half a point ahead of Marin Bosiočić. In November 2025, he finished in clear second place with a score of 6/9 at the Category XI Tournament of Peace in Zagreb.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Livaić is a dynamic, concrete computer-era calculator who prioritizes active piece play, deep concrete preparation, and tactical alertness. He is highly proficient in navigating complex, asymmetrical middlegame positions, particularly those arising from French and Sicilian pawn structures. He is willing to accept structural imbalances, such as doubled pawns or isolated queen pawns, in exchange for open files, diagonal activity for his bishop pair, and direct attacking chances against the enemy king.
While his tactical vision allows him to construct sophisticated attacking sequences and spot deep tactical blunders by his opponents, he has occasionally shown vulnerability in converting complex, highly technical endgames from positions of clear advantage. His defensive identity relies heavily on active counterplay and tactical resourcefulness rather than passive resistance.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Livaić’s white repertoire is heavily built around 1.d4, but he regularly utilizes 1.Nf3 and the flank opening 1.b3 to bypass deep theoretical mainlines and steer opponents into strategic battles.
-
Queen's Gambit Declined (Catalan / Ragozin): Against 1...Nf6 and 2...e6 setups, Livaić frequently employs Catalan or Ragozin setups:
-
Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack (1.b3): Used as a highly successful practical weapon to create immediate imbalances:
2. As Black
As Black, Livaić is known for his highly specialized and theoretically dense systems. He historically specialized in the French Defense and has since developed a versatile black repertoire including the Sicilian Najdorf and flexible 1...d6 setups.
-
The French Defense (Winawer & Advance Variations): Livaić’s signature black defense, known for his deep preparation in the Winawer lines:
-
The Sicilian Najdorf: Played when seeking maximum asymmetry and sharp counterplay against 1.e4:
-
The 1...d6 "Against Everything" System: Livaić co-authored a comprehensive Chessable repertoire focusing on the flexible 1...d6 setup, which translates into the Philidor Defense against 1.e4:
