Nikolas Theodorou (born September 17, 2000) is a Greek Grandmaster (awarded in 2021) and one of the leading representatives of Greece's modern chess generation. He achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2656 in November 2025. Theodorou is a highly accomplished team competitor, highlighted by an individual silver medal at the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai, and has established himself as a formidable Swiss tournament competitor. A graduate of Saint Louis University, he has consistently performed at an elite collegiate level in the United States while developing a reputation as an exceptionally precise calculator and theoretical innovator.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Born in Athens, Theodorou relocated with his family to Rethymno, Crete, in 2006. He began formal chess instruction at the Chess Club of Rethymno in 2007 and progressed to the Chania Chess Academy in 2015. His junior career was marked by dominant national performances, winning his respective age group at the Greek Chess Championships five times. Theodorou secured the International Master (IM) title in 2016 and completed his final Grandmaster (GM) norm in September 2021.

Alongside his professional chess development, Theodorou pursued academic excellence in the United States. In the Sharjah Masters 2024, Theodorou defeated Arjun Erigaisi in 28 moves. At the FIDE Grand Swiss in Samarkand in September 2025, he defeated reigning Candidates winner Gukesh Dommaraju in a highly technical rook endgame. He closed out the 2025 season by winning the XTX Markets London Chess Classic Super Rapidplay with a score of 9/10, securing consecutive wins against Luke McShane, Leinier Dominguez Perez, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
