Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Nikolozi Kacharava emerged as one of the country's most promising junior talents in the early 2020s. He secured his International Master (IM) title before embarking on a highly successful grandmaster campaign.
Kacharava secured his three necessary Grandmaster norms in major international events across Europe:
- The European Individual Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland (September 2021).
- The World Junior U-20 Chess Championship in Cala Gonone, Sardinia, Italy (October 2022).
- The European Individual Chess Championship in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia (March 2023).
His GM title was officially ratified by FIDE in 2023.
In October 2022, Kacharava achieved a major junior milestone at the World Junior Chess Championship in Sardinia, Italy. In a highly competitive open section, he finished tied for first place on a score of 8/11 (+6 -1 =4) alongside four other players. After tiebreaks were applied, Kacharava claimed the bronze medal behind winner Abdulla Gadimbayli and runner-up Adam Kozak.
In February 2024, Kacharava put on a strong performance at the 83rd Georgian Chess Championship. He finished in second place with a score of 5.5/9, claiming the silver medal after defeating the defending champion, Mikheil Mchedlishvili, on tiebreak criteria.
In April 2026, Kacharava achieved one of his career-best individual results at the 26th European Individual Chess Championship in Katowice, Poland. Starting as the 86th seed with a 2500 rating, he performed far above expectation to score 8/11 (+6 -1 =4), finishing in 10th place overall. His tournament run included high-profile victories against legendary grandmaster Vasyl Ivanchuk and Spanish GM Jaime Santos Latasa, resulting in a tournament performance rating of 2691.
Outside of individual tournaments, Kacharava moved to the United States to pursue higher education, enrolling at Saint Louis University (SLU) to study Economics. As a key member of the elite SLU Chess Team, he has consistently competed in collegiate matches, helping the university secure prestigious team titles.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad (2024): Represented Georgia on the top boards in Budapest, Hungary. He played Board 1 in Round 4 against David Howell (England) in an exhausting 113-move struggle, and Board 2 in Round 10 against Daniel Quizon (Philippines), helping Georgia secure a 2.5–1.5 team victory over the Philippines.
- Collegiate Chess League: Represented Saint Louis University (SLU), contributing to the team's championship titles and deep playoff runs.
- FIDE World University Team Chess Championship (2026): Represented Saint Louis University in the rapid online qualifiers alongside grandmasters Aryan Chopra and Bharath Subramaniyam H., helping the team advance comfortably to the knockout stages with a dominant performance.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Kacharava possesses a classical, universal playing style, demonstrating high technical precision and calculation depth typical of the computer-assisted generation. He thrives in structured, maneuvering middlegames, where he can slowly build space advantages and utilize small pawn breaks to increase pressure.
His handling of king safety is pragmatic; he generally avoids premature structural concessions around his king's castle, preferring a solid defensive foundation. In terms of material imbalances, Kacharava exhibits strong capabilities in handling bishop-versus-knight imbalances, often keeping the bishop pair in open or semi-open positions to exert long-range pressure. He also shows technical proficiency in handling isolated queen's pawn (IQP) structures, both playing with the dynamic space advantage it provides and defending against it by blockading the weak pawn.
Defensively, Kacharava is a resilient calculator, capable of maintaining composure and dragging games out in technically inferior or passive positions. This is complemented by his endgame profiling, where he shows high competence in converting small, technical pluses. He is particularly adept in active rook endgames and minor-piece endgames, utilizing active king activation and precise pawn-structure transitions to convert endgames into full points.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Kacharava's opening choices reflect a theoretically robust and mainstream professional repertoire, utilizing highly concrete, computer-validated lines.
1. As White
With the white pieces, Kacharava almost exclusively relies on 1.e4, steering games toward highly theoretical open systems.
- Italian Game (Giuoco Piano): He regularly utilizes the Italian Game, aiming for the quiet but positionally rich Giuoco Pianissimo setups to outmaneuver opponents in the middlegame:
- Sicilian Defense Anti-Systems: Against the Sicilian Defense, he has frequently employed the Chekhover Variation, bypassing heavy theory in the open lines while maintaining a space advantage:
- Caro-Kann Defense (Advance Variation): Against 1...c6, he favors the Advance Variation, clamping down on the center and seeking a spatial edge:
2. As Black
As Black, Kacharava maintains a highly flexible and classical defensive repertoire against both 1.e4 and 1.d4.
- Petrov's Defense: Against 1.e4, Kacharava frequently chooses the hyper-solid Petrov's (Petroff) Defense, proving difficult to break down in symmetrical pawn structures:
- Pirc Defense: He also uses the Pirc Defense as a more asymmetrical, counter-attacking weapon:
- Queen's Gambit Accepted: Against 1.d4, Kacharava regularly employs the Queen's Gambit Accepted, relying on active piece play and precise central liquidations:
