Overview
Olexandr Mykolayovych Bortnyk (born October 18, 1996) is a Ukrainian chess grandmaster (GM) who represents Ukraine (UKR). He was awarded the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2011, the International Master (IM) title in 2013, and the Grandmaster title in 2015. Bortnyk's career-high classical FIDE rating of 2610 was achieved in December 2017. He is primarily recognized as a world-class speed chess specialist, tournament player, and trainer-player. After immigrating to the United States in 2018, he co-founded the Bortnik School of Chess and has resided in Charlotte, North Carolina, since 2022, where he serves as a coach at the Charlotte Chess Center.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Olexandr Bortnyk was born in Oleksandrivka, Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine. His older brother, Mykola Bortnyk, is also an accomplished chess player who holds the International Master title.
Bortnyk emerged as a prominent junior talent on both national and international stages. In 2014, he achieved a major milestone by winning the World Youth Chess Championship in the Under-18 category in Durban, South Africa.
In April 2015, at the age of 19, Bortnyk won the 12th Vladimir Nabokov Memorial in Kyiv, Ukraine, with an outstanding score of 7.5/9. This performance secured his third and final Grandmaster norm, leading to FIDE officially awarding him the Grandmaster title later that year at its 86th Congress in Abu Dhabi. Consequently, his classical rating crossed the 2500 threshold, eventually peaking at 2610 in December 2017.
Bortnyk has built a formidable reputation as a speed chess competitor, particularly in blitz and bullet formats. In 2016, he won the Vladimir Petrov Memorial Blitz tournament in Jaunkemeri, Latvia, finishing clear first with a score of 9/11 ahead of a strong field. He has regularly competed in elite online championships; in 2019, he won the round-robin qualifier to reach the final of the Chess.com Bullet Chess Championship, where he finished runner-up to GM Hikaru Nakamura. In 2025, Bortnyk claimed first place in the Road to Esports World Cup Chess at DreamHack and won the inaugural DreamHack Chess Tournament. He has consistently ranked near the top of global blitz leaderboards, achieving a peak FIDE blitz rating of 2793 in September 2025.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- Russian Team Championship (2014): Competed as a young master, gaining critical high-level tournament experience.
- Pro Chess League (2018): Represented online rapid and blitz teams.
- World Rapid & Blitz Championships (2024 & 2025): Actively participated representing Ukraine, scoring victories against numerous grandmaster opponents.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Bortnyk is characterized as a highly dynamic, tactical, and pragmatic player, whose strengths are deeply rooted in concrete computer-era calculation. His style is optimized for the high-intensity demands of rapid, blitz, and bullet chess, where he prioritizes active piece play, tactical traps, and rapid mobilization over slow positional maneuvering.
In the middlegame, Bortnyk demonstrates a keen eye for king safety and aggressive king hunts. He often seeks asymmetrical pawn structures and is highly willing to accept structural compromises—such as isolated pawns or compromised pawn shields—in exchange for dynamic piece activity and tactical counterplay.
In endgames, Bortnyk is highly technical and resilient. He has a notable strength in converting small advantages through active rook play and utilizing passed pawns. His defensive identity in worse positions relies heavily on establishing tactical fortresses or initiating rapid counter-attacks to muddy the waters, making him an exceptionally difficult opponent to defeat even in theoretically inferior endgames.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Bortnyk’s opening choices reflect his focus on fast-paced, sharp, and highly practical weapon systems. He values setups that lead to rapid development, asymmetrical imbalances, and rich tactical possibilities.
1. As White
Bortnyk is highly versatile as White, with a significant portion of his games commencing with 1.d4 or 1.e4.
Against 1.d4, one of Bortnyk's most frequent choices is the Jobava London System, which he developed and popularized in collaboration with the late GM Daniel Naroditsky. The main setup relies on early knight development to c3 and the bishop to f4:
Against Black's critical counter-stroke with 3...c5, Bortnyk employs an ultra-aggressive system involving an early e4 break:
When opting for 1.e4, Bortnyk is a prominent specialist in the Alapin Variation of the Sicilian Defense (2.c3), which provides him with a solid pawn center and a clear plan to neutralize Black's typical counter-attacking options:
2. As Black
As Black, Bortnyk is known for unorthodox and combative defensive choices designed to catch opponents off-guard.
Against 1.e4, his signature theoretical weapon is Alekhine's Defence, an opening on which he has published extensive course material. He regularly plays both the Exchange Variation and classical lines. In the Exchange Variation, he prefers the exd6 recaptures:
Alternatively, in the main-line modern variations, he navigates the complex structures after:
Bortnyk also frequently employs the Philidor Defence as a resilient, solid counter-system against 1.e4:
Against 1.d4, Bortnyk is a long-time proponent of the King's Indian Defence (KID), utilizing the sharp asymmetrical structures of the system to generate counterplaying opportunities. He co-authored a comprehensive guide on the King's Indian Defence with Daniel Naroditsky:
Additionally, against queen's pawn setups, Bortnyk frequently adopts double-fianchetto systems (often involving an early Nf6 and b6) to establish a hypermodern, flexible layout.
