Overview

Panneerselvam Iniyan (commonly known as P. Iniyan), born on September 13, 2002, is an Indian chess grandmaster representing the All India Chess Federation (IND). He was officially awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE in 2019, becoming India's 61st Grandmaster. Iniyan reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2601 in November 2025. Primarily a tournament player and former prodigy, he consolidated his status at the national level by winning both the Indian National Classical Chess Championship and the National Rapid Chess Championship in 2025.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Iniyan was introduced to chess at the age of five in his hometown of Erode, Tamil Nadu, by his father, K. Panneerselvam, a former district-level cricketer. His early chess development was supported by his mother, Saranya, and guided by his longtime coach, K. Visweswaran.

He secured the International Master (IM) title in May 2017, having earned norms at the Barbera Open in 2016, the Lorca Open in 2016, and the Montebelluna Cup in 2017.

Iniyan's progression to the Grandmaster title involved earning several GM norms:

• First GM norm: June 2017 at the "Ciutat de Montcada" Open in Spain.
• Second GM norm: February 2018 at the Böblingen Open in Germany.
• Third GM norm: July 2018 at the Barberà del Vallès Open in Spain, where he finished in second place.
• Subsequent GM norms: Abu Dhabi Masters (August 2018) and Böblingen Open (December 2018).

He officially secured the Grandmaster title on March 5, 2019, at the Noisiel Open in France, crossing the required 2500 Elo live rating threshold by defeating GM Sergey Fedorchuk in the sixth round.

• In March 2025, he won the Cannes Chess Open, finishing with 7.5/9 ahead of Aradhya Garg and Kazybek Nogerbek.
• In July 2025, he placed equal first-second at the Dole Open in Aix-en-Provence, France, with 7.5/9, subsequently winning the event after blitz tiebreaks.
• In October 2025, Iniyan captured his maiden National Classical Chess Championship in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, remaining undefeated with 9/11 (seven wins, four draws) to win on tiebreak over IM H. Goutham Krishna. This victory occurred in the same year he won the National Rapid Chess Championship (March 2025).
