Overview

Pavel Andreevich Ponkratov is a Russian chess grandmaster born on 15 July 1988 in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 2006 and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2010. Ponkratov achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2662 in November 2021. He is primarily known as an active tournament competitor, a formidable rapid and blitz specialist, and a creative theoretical player who frequently champions sharp sidelines.

Ponkratov developed his chess foundation in Chelyabinsk. In his youth, he won the Russian Students Championship in consecutive years (2008 and 2009). His international breakthroughs came in rapid play and open tournaments. In December 2017, Ponkratov won the bronze medal at the European Rapid Chess Championship in Katowice. He established himself as a dominant presence on the Russian rapid circuit, winning the Russian Rapid Cup in both 2017 and 2018.

In international open competition, Ponkratov won the 12th Chennai Open in January 2020 on tiebreaks with a score of 8/10, and followed this in July 2020 by winning the "Ciudad de Leon" International Open. At the FIDE World Cup 2021 in Sochi, Ponkratov defeated Andre Ventura Sousa (1.5–0.5), Yuriy Kuzubov (1.5–0.5), and Jahongir Vakhidov (3–1) before being eliminated in the fourth round by French GM Etienne Bacrot after a rapid tiebreak (2.5–1.5). Later that year, he scored 6/11 at the FIDE Grand Swiss 2021. In March 2022, he took first place on tiebreak at the 1st Guwahati Grandmaster Open with a score of 8.5/10.
