In 2020, he secured the Russian Junior Chess Championship (U21) in Moscow.
In 2021, Makarian received a presidential wild card invitation from Arkady Dvorkovich to compete in the FIDE World Cup in Sochi, Russia, where he was eliminated in the first round by Polish grandmaster Kacper Piorun. Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Initially noted in his youth as an ultra-positional player, Makarian has developed a universal, highly pragmatic, computer-era playing style. He has exceptional calculation speed, making him highly effective in fast time controls where rapid tactical vision is paramount. He possesses strong defensive awareness, demonstrating the ability to neutralize space advantages and patiently maintain king safety in slightly inferior middlegames.
Makarian is structurally versatile, regularly navigating the Carlsbad pawn structure or open, asymmetrical files in the Sicilian. He handles material imbalances with care, showing proficiency in converting bishop pair advantages and minor piece imbalances. In the endgame, he plays technically precise lines, particularly in rook-and-pawn endgames and classic knight-versus-bishop conversions, although occasionally vulnerable to minor technical slips under extreme time constraints.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Makarian primarily opens with 1. d4, steering games toward closed, strategic battles. He relies heavily on Catalan structures and Bogo-Indian setups to secure stable middlegame space advantages.
Against the Queen's Gambit Declined, he frequently adopts the Catalan Closed system, placing long-term pressure on Black's queenside:
Alternatively, he is highly theoretical in the Open Catalan systems, testing Black's ability to hold onto the gambit pawn:
Against the Bogo-Indian Defense, he plays the positional mainlines to neutralize Black's early bishop deployment:
2. As Black
Against 1. e4, Makarian primarily depends on the Sicilian Defense to create sharp, asymmetrical counterplay, frequently entering the Najdorf variation:
He also employs the French Defense as a solid defensive alternative, occasionally utilizing the Burn Variation:
When facing 1. d4, he relies on the Bogo-Indian Defense to simplify the position and achieve rapid development:
He is also highly prepared in the Queen's Gambit Declined main lines:
