Sergey Maksimovich Drygalov (born May 19, 1999) is a Russian chess Grandmaster (GM). FIDE officially awarded him the International Master (IM) title in 2018 and the Grandmaster title in 2022. He achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2571 in December 2025. Drygalov is a professional tournament player, trainer, and accomplished online competitor. He is also recognized alongside his twin brother, Andrey Drygalov, as part of a rare grandmaster sibling pair.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Drygalov was born in Kurgan, Russia, and developed his chess career alongside his twin brother. In 2012, he achieved significant early success by securing the silver medal in the Under-14 category at the European Youth Chess Championship. During his youth development, he also won the Moscow Open in his respective age categories in both 2010 and 2012.
He earned his third and final norm for the International Master title at the Alexander Panchenko Memorial in Chelyabinsk in late 2017, and FIDE officially ratified the title in early 2018. Drygalov's career gained further momentum in April 2019 when he won the Russian Junior Under-21 Championship in Sochi, finishing ahead of Semen Khanin and his brother Andrey. Later that year, he won the Ural Federal District Men's Championship.
In September 2020, Drygalov won the open individual section of the All-Russian Student Competition. Following consistent performances on the national and international open circuits, he fulfilled his final grandmaster requirements and was awarded the Grandmaster title in 2022.
His notable open tournament performances include winning the St. Petersburg Summer (Петербуржское лето) tournament in August 2023. On September 26, 2023, he won a Chess.com Titled Tuesday tournament, finishing undefeated in a field that featured elite international competition.
In early 2024, Drygalov placed 6th out of 142 players at the highly competitive Aeroflot Open A in Moscow, scoring 6.0/9. Later that year, he won the Shcherbin Memorial. In January 2025, Drygalov dominated the Cape Town Masters Challenge, finishing with a perfect score of 9/9, two full points ahead of his nearest competitor. In November 2025, he tied for second place at the President's Cup of Tajikistan in Dushanbe, scoring 6:5/9 and claiming the silver medal on tiebreak. This string of performances propelled him to his peak FIDE rating of 2571.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- All-Russian Student Competition (2020): Representing Ural State Mining University (USMU) alongside Alexey Sarana, Polina Shuvalova, and Anna Afonasieva, Drygalov played on the top boards to secure a dominant team victory with 23 points, while concurrently winning the individual open gold medal.
- Russian Team Chess Championship Premier League (2022): Represented his club in the premier division of the Russian team leagues.
- Russian Youth Team Championship (2017): Played for the Kurgan team, helping them secure a victory against the heavily favored Moscow team.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Drygalov's playing style is characteristic of a concrete, computer-era classical player. He combines high tactical alertness with a structurally rigorous positional approach.
- King Safety & Space Advantages: Drygalov frequently plays setups where he establishes a solid pawn center, using small space advantages to squeeze opponents while maintaining a highly secure king position.
- Structural Decisions: He is comfortable playing Carlsbad pawn structures and handling the dynamic pawn chains arising from Indian defenses. He shows excellent understanding of when to accept isolated queen pawn structures in exchange for active piece play.
- Tactical Vigilance: His rapid calculating speed is a primary asset, as demonstrated by his successes in elite online blitz and rapid formats. He is highly alert to tactical transitions and intermediate moves in complex middlegames.
- Endgame Proficiency: In the endgame, Drygalov is highly technical. He is adept at converting minimal positional pluses, particularly in active rook-and-pawn endings and queenless middlegames where minor-piece activity and king centralization are paramount.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Drygalov is primarily a queen's pawn player, utilizing 1.d4 as his main opening move and rarely deviating to 1.e4 in classical chess. He possesses deep theoretical preparation in several mainlines:
- Queen's Gambit Declined (Harrwitz Attack): Against 1...d5 systems, Drygalov heavily relies on the Harrwitz system with an early Bf4, aiming for solid development and central control:
- Ragozin Defense: When facing the Nimzo-adjacent setups, Drygalov regularly contests the Ragozin structure:
- King's Indian Defense (Orthodox System): Against the King's Indian, he prefers the classical mainlines, maintaining space in the center and preparing queenside expansion while neutralizing Black's kingside attack:
- Bogo-Indian Defense: He answers the Bogo-Indian with classical setups designed to restrict Black's dark-squared bishop:
2. As Black
Drygalov’s Black repertoire balances the pursuit of dynamic counterplay against 1.e4 with highly reliable, solid structures against 1.d4:
- Sicilian Defense (Najdorf Variation): Against 1.e4, his main theoretical weapon is the Najdorf, allowing him to play for a win in highly asymmetric and tactically complex middlegames:
- Sicilian French / Kan Systems: He also employs flexible 2...e6 systems to avoid heavily analyzed mainlines and steer the game into positional channels:
- Nimzo-Indian Defense: Against 1.d4, Drygalov regularly employs the Nimzo-Indian, using the bishop on b4 to pressure White's queenside development:
- Semi-Slav Defense: When opting for more classical central control, he utilizes the Semi-Slav, creating a highly solid defensive barrier with counterattacking potential:
