Timothé Razafindratsima (born October 18, 2006) is a French International Master (IM) representing France. He was awarded the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2019 and achieved the International Master title in 2022. Razafindratsima reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2546 in May 2026. Primarily a competitive tournament player, he has established himself as one of France’s most prominent young chess prospects, achieving multiple continental youth championships and representing his country in international team competitions.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Razafindratsima began playing chess around the age of six, learning the rules from a mobile phone application. Showing early aptitude, he finished fourth in his first tournament without prior formal coaching. Following his family's relocation to Bordeaux, he went on to win the Under-8 Gironde and Aquitaine regional championships. In 2014, he earned the bronze medal in the Boys Under-8 ("petit poussin") category at the French Youth Chess Championship in Belfort.
In 2019, Razafindratsima attained the FIDE Master title. He secured his first major junior continental milestone in November 2022 at the European Youth Chess Championship in Antalya, Turkey, where he won the Open Under-16 section with an impressive score of 7.5/9. This performance coincided with his transition to the International Master title later that year.
Two years later, in September 2024, Razafindratsima clinched another continental gold medal by winning the European Youth Chess Championship Open Under-18 section in Prague, Czech Republic. He completed the tournament as the sole winner, again scoring 7.5/9.
In February 2026, Razafindratsima earned a major milestone in senior professional chess at the 42nd Cappelle-la-Grande Open in France. Facing a strong field of grandmasters, he finished in clear second place on tiebreaks with a score of 7/9, winning six consecutive games before his sole defeat against tournament winner GM Pranav Anand. This performance earned him his first Grandmaster (GM) norm. After crossing the 2500 Elo threshold in early 2026, he reached his peak classical rating of 2546 in May 2026. At the club level, he represents C'Chartres Échecs in the Top 16 French League, having previously played for Cannes Échecs.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Razafindratsima possesses a dynamic, universal style heavily reliant on computer-era calculation and sharp tactical awareness. He is comfortable entering highly theoretical and asymmetrical middlegames where piece activity dictates the flow of play.
In positions with a space advantage, he employs structured pawn breaks to restrict opponent coordination. He is willing to accept minor structural imbalances, such as isolated queen pawns or doubled pawns, in exchange for open files and active piece placement. In transition from the middlegame, Razafindratsima displays mature judgment in converting complex tactical skirmishes into favorable minor-piece endgames. His endgame handling is technically robust, showing high accuracy in rook endgames with active king participation and in knight-versus-bishop conversions.

2. As Black
As Black, Razafindratsima seeks complex, double-edged structures to maximize counterplay.

Against anti-Sicilian systems such as the Rossolimo Attack, he chooses robust fianchetto setups to protect his king's safety:
