Vahap Sanal

Overview

Vahap Sanal (born May 26, 1998) is a Turkish chess grandmaster representing the Turkish Chess Federation (TUR). Awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE in 2016, Sanal previously achieved the titles of Candidate Master (2008), FIDE Master (2012), and International Master (2012). He reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2608 in November 2023. As a three-time Turkish Chess Champion (winning in 2019, 2020, and 2024), Sanal is a prominent tournament and team competitor who has represented Turkey in several international events, including the FIDE World Cup and the European Team Chess Championship.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Sanal demonstrated early chess talent, winning the 4th World Schools Chess Championships in the Under-11 section in Singapore in 2008 with a score of 8.5/9, which secured him the Candidate Master title. In 2012, he won the European School Championship Open 15 in Greece with a score of 8.5/9, earning his FIDE Master title. Later that year, he qualified for the International Master title. He fulfilled his final grandmaster requirements in 2016 at the age of 18, becoming one of Turkey's youngest grandmasters.

On the national stage, Sanal captured his first Turkish Chess Championship in 2019. He successfully defended his title at the 2020 Turkish Chess Championship in Kemer, dominating the round-robin field to score 7/9 (+5 =4 -0). In December 2024, Sanal claimed his third national title in Antalya, winning a knockout tournament that featured the country's strongest grandmasters. Sanal also achieved notable open tournament success abroad, securing clear first place at the Fagernes International GM tournament in Norway in April 2023 with a score of 7.5/9.

Sanal's most significant international individual breakthrough occurred at the FIDE World Cup 2023 in Baku. He defeated Croatian grandmaster Zdenko Kozul in the first round. In the second round, he registered a major upset by eliminating Uzbekistan's super-grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov (rated 2725) in the classical portion, drawing with White and winning with Black. After defeating GM Anton Korobov in the third round, Sanal became the first Turkish player to reach the fourth round of a FIDE World Cup, where he was eventually eliminated in rapid tiebreaks by GM Vasyl Ivanchuk.
