He earned his FIDE Master (FM) title in 2016, his International Master (IM) title in 2021, and achieved the Grandmaster title in 2023 at the age of 20, making him one of the youngest grandmasters in Iceland's history. Stefansson achieved a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2551 in March 2025. He is primarily active as a competitive tournament professional, national team player, and Olympiad representative.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Stefansson began playing chess at the age of five, taught by his father. He descends from a historically significant Icelandic chess lineage; his great-great-grandfather, Pétur Zóphóniasson, was the inaugural Icelandic Chess Champion in 1913. He rose through the junior ranks to earn his FIDE Master title in 2016. He achieved his first IM norm in July 2019 at the Glorney Gilbert IM Norm Event in Ireland with a score of 7/9, paving the way to the FIDE International Master title in 2021. Stefansson completed his grandmaster requirements in 2023.
In May 2023, Stefansson secured his first national title at the Icelandic Chess Championship in Hafnarfjörður. He finished tied for first place on 8.5/11 alongside Grandmasters Hannes Stefánsson and Guðmundur Kjartansson, subsequently winning the title in a blitz playoff. In 2025, he claimed his second Icelandic Chess Championship, finishing clear first with a score of 7/9.
On the international open circuit, Stefansson won a grandmaster round-robin tournament in České Budějovice, Czech Republic, in July 2024 with a score of 7.5/9. In September 2024, he won the Ciudad de Gáldar Open on the Canary Islands, finishing in clear first place with 7.5/9. At the European Individual Chess Championship in April 2026, Stefansson had an exceptional performance, holding the sole lead at the halfway mark with 5.5/6 after defeating GM Lorenzo Lodici and ultimately placing 5th overall with a final score of 8/11.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad (2024): Represented Iceland on Board 1 in Budapest, Hungary. Notably played on the top board against GM Gukesh Dommaraju of India and drew his game against GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France.
- European Team Chess Championship (2025): Represented Iceland in Montenegro.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Stefansson is a universal player who thrives in dynamic and tactical positions, prioritizing counterplay over passive defense. Rather than committing to heavy opening memorization, his training emphasizes tactical sharpness and high familiarity with typical middlegame structures. He frequently plays double-edged variations where he can leverage imbalances to capture the initiative.
In the endgame phase, Stefansson has demonstrated refined technical capabilities, especially in complex queen endgames. A notable example occurred at the 2026 European Individual Chess Championship, where he navigated a highly double-edged queen endgame to defeat GM Lorenzo Lodici in 71 moves after converting a single pawn advantage.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Stefansson predominantly relies on 1.d4, transitioning into Catalan setups or the Queen's Gambit Declined to secure stable positional advantages.
- Catalan Opening: His primary weapon for long-term pressure, often entering the Open Catalan.
- Queen's Gambit Declined (Three Knights Variation): He frequently employs this line to press for central control against solid setups.
2. As Black
As Black, Stefansson chooses active, counter-attacking defenses to create asymmetric play.
- Scandinavian Defense: His main response to 1.e4, challenging White in the center immediately and establishing active piece play.
- Leningrad Dutch: Against 1.d4, he employs this sharp, kingside-fianchettoed defense to unbalance the structure early.
- Sicilian Defense (Najdorf Variation): Used as a secondary, highly sharp option against 1.e4.
