Overview

Xiangyu Xu is a Chinese chess grandmaster born on September 19, 1999, in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China. Representing the Chinese Chess Federation (CHN), Xu was officially awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2017. He achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2636 in May 2024. Xu is a highly prominent player in Chinese team and individual chess, recognized as the 2026 Chinese Chess Champion, a regular competitor in the Chinese Chess League, and an accomplished coach and captain within the Chinese national team system.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Xu developed his early chess career in China's national youth system. By early 2017, he attained the required FIDE rating and norm criteria for the Grandmaster title. His title norms were completed in domestic Chinese tournaments, and his title was officially ratified at the 88th FIDE Congress in Antalya, Turkey, in October 2017. Shortly after, Xu represented China at the 2017 FIDE World Junior Under-20 Championship in Tarvisio, Italy, where he scored 7.5/11, finishing in a tie for the top positions and ultimately placing 21st on tiebreaks.

At the senior international level, Xu made a significant impact during his debut at the 2019 FIDE World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Entering as a lower seed, he executed consecutive match upsets by defeating GM Bu Xiangzhi (3.5–2.5 after rapid tiebreaks) in the first round and GM Ernesto Inarkiev (1.5–0.5) in the second round, before being eliminated in the third round by GM Alexander Grischuk.

On the domestic circuit, Xu established himself as one of China's most consistent grandmasters. He finished on the podium at the Chinese Chess Championship multiple times, securing third place in 2022 and 2024, and finishing runner-up in 2023. In May 2026, Xu achieved his greatest domestic milestone by winning the Chinese Chess Championship in Xinghua.
