Overview
Ruben Gideon Köllner (born September 24, 2004) is a German International Master (IM) representing the German Chess Federation (GER). He achieved the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2019 and was awarded the International Master title in 2021. He has reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2530. Köllner is an active tournament competitor, a regular team player for the top-tier club Schachfreunde Deizisau in the German Chess Bundesliga, and an opening theoretician and coach who has produced instructional work on non-mainline systems.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Köllner was born in Gummersbach, Germany, and was introduced to chess at the age of nine by his father. Growing up in a chess family, he participated in numerous national and international junior events. His early chess development began at SV Bergneustadt/Derschlag before he transferred to SG Bochum 1931 for the 2016/17 season, where he gained initial experience in the 2. Bundesliga. In the 2018/19 season, he joined the Bundesliga club Schachfreunde Deizisau.
In junior competitions, Köllner secured several national successes, including winning the German Youth Championships in the Under-12 (2016) and Under-16 age categories. Internationally, he represented Germany at the European Youth Rapid Championship, winning the Under-18 Rapid title in September 2021. In September 2023, he competed as part of the German delegation at the FIDE World Junior Chess Championship in Mexico City.
Köllner completed his three norms required for the International Master title at tournaments in Bremen, Dortmund, and Aarhus (Denmark), with the title officially approved by FIDE in 2021. He secured his first Grandmaster (GM) norm at the 1st Munich Pfingst-Open in June 2023, where he finished in 6th place, concluding the tournament with a final-round draw with the black pieces against GM Anton Demchenko.
In February 2025, Köllner won the 3rd International Brühl Open, finishing with an undefeated score of 4.5/5. He also finished in second place at the 4th International Baden-Baden Faschingsopen in March 2025, scoring 7.5/9. At the Grenke Chess Open in April 2026, he registered a performance rating of 2641 as the highest-performing German competitor, though he did not receive a GM norm due to an insufficient number of grandmaster opponents.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- German Chess Bundesliga (2018–present): Representing Schachfreunde Deizisau, primarily playing on lower boards as a reliable team contributor. In the 2025/26 season, he played key matches, securing a draw against GM Jan Krejci in February 2026 and scoring a victory against Markus Schäfer in May 2026.
- Mitropa Online Cup (2021): Represented the German national team, playing on Board 3 and scoring a solid 50% result (such as a draw against IM Florian Schwabeneder).
- Turkish Chess Super League (2024–2025): Competed as an international player representing his club.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Köllner’s style is best characterized as a concrete, universal, computer-era calculator with a penchant for solid positional management combined with highly direct, sharp counterattacking lines when using his preferred openings. He is highly proficient in navigating non-standard middlegame structures that arise from systems like the Trompowsky and the Philidor Lion, where early queenless middlegames or asymmetrical pawn chains are common. He is willing to accept micro-weaknesses or delayed king safety in exchange for dynamic counterplay and concrete tactical activity, as demonstrated by his victory featuring a rook sacrifice on h7 against the Caro-Kann in the 2023 Sportland NRW Cup.
In the endgame, Köllner shows strong technical competence and has been noted for his precise defensive capabilities in slightly inferior positions. He is particularly effective in technical rook-and-pawn endings and knight-versus-bishop endgames, which frequently arise from his dense, closed opening choices. His ability to solidly manage and save complex endgames has been key to his high performance in team leagues and Swiss opens.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Köllner has a highly specialized opening repertoire. As an author and theoretician, he has popularized specific sidelines designed to bypass heavy mainline theory while steering the game toward complex, asymmetrical structures.
1. As White
Köllner’s White repertoire is heavily focused on queenside openings, avoiding mainlines of the Queen's Gambit or Open Sicilians. His primary weapon against 1...Sf6 is the Trompowsky Attack:
Against other setups or when seeking a more positional structure, he frequently deploys the Colle System or the Colle-Zukertort variation:
In these structures, he prefers slow, thematic queenside expansion or centralized pressure, relying on his deep understanding of the resulting tabiyas.
2. As Black
Against 1. e4, Köllner’s signature defense is the Philidor Defense, specifically the modern Lion Variation, where he accepts a space deficit for a highly resilient, flexible setup:
He also frequently plays the Pirc Defense, transitioning into similar structures or sharp counterattacks:
Against 1. d4, Köllner relies heavily on King's Indian-style setups or Indian defenses to generate asymmetrical counterplay:
In some encounters, he also utilizes solid classical setups, including the Queen's Gambit Declined:
