Overview

Toms Kantans (born 16 January 1994 in Riga, Latvia) is a Latvian chess grandmaster representing the Latvian Chess Federation (LAT). He reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2560 in April 2026, matching his current rating profile. Kantans was awarded the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2010, followed by the International Master (IM) title in 2014, and achieved the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2017. His competitive identity is that of a professional tournament player, active league competitor, and multi-time Latvian national champion.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Kantans began playing chess at the age of six. He represented Latvia in numerous international junior events, winning the silver medal at the 2007 European Union Youth Championship in the Under-14 category, and following it with a bronze medal in the same event in 2008. He earned his IM title in 2014 and achieved his GM title in 2017, securing his final norms through open international tournaments and European events.

Nationally, Kantans has been a highly successful competitor in the Latvian Chess Championship, winning the title twice, in 2023 and 2026. He also finished as the runner-up in 2015, 2017, and 2020, and placed third in 2010 and 2014.

In international individual tournaments, Kantans took second place at the Riga Technical University Open "A" tournament in August 2022. In June 2023, he won the Canadian Transnational Classic Crown in Montreal. Aside from individual competitions, Kantans is a frequent team player, representing the SV Erkenschwick 1923 in the German 2. Bundesliga Nord (previously appearing for SG Speyer-Schwegenheim), and contributing to several national team titles with the Riga Technical University (RTU) team (2010, 2012, 2015).

Kantans married Polish Woman International Master (WIM) Anna Iwanow (now Kantane) in 2015.
