He is trained under the guidance of Azerbaijani Grandmaster Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Erdoğmuş was born in Bursa, Turkey, and was introduced to chess at the age of six by his kindergarten teacher in 2017. He quickly established himself as an elite junior talent, winning the European Youth Chess Championship in the Under-8 category in 2019 with a perfect score.
Following a brief hiatus in over-the-board play due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Erdoğmuş resumed competitive play and rapidly accelerated his title progression. In 2022, he was officially awarded the FIDE Master (FM) and International Master (IM) titles, making him the youngest International Master in Turkish chess history at the age of 11. He secured his final IM norm during the Svetozar Gligorić Memorial in Serbia.
Erdoğmuş's pursuit of the Grandmaster title culminated in early 2024. He achieved his first GM norm at the Sunway Sitges Chess Festival in December 2023, followed by his second norm at the Jeddah Young Masters in January 2024. He secured his third and final GM norm at the Grenke Chess Open in April 2024. FIDE officially confirmed his Grandmaster title in July 2024 when he was 12 years, 9 months, and 29 days old, making him the fourth-youngest Grandmaster in chess history.
Following his title confirmation, Erdoğmuş continued his rapid ascent up the FIDE rating ladder. In May 2024, he achieved a classical rating of 2569, breaking Judit Polgár's 35-year-old record for the highest-rated under-13 player in history. In August 2024, at the 30th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival, he surpassed the 2600 Elo mark in live ratings at the age of 13 years, 2 months, and 15 days, becoming the youngest player in history to do so.
In late 2025, Erdoğmuş won a classical six-game match against former Candidate and World Championship challenger Peter Svidler by a score of 4–2 during the Clash of Generations in Marseille. He followed this in December 2025 with a 3.5–2.5 match victory over French Super-GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the Clash of Generations II match.
In January 2026, Erdoğmuş made his debut in the elite Masters group of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee. He scored a highly respectable 7.0/13 against elite opposition, including a notable victory against grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi.
In April 2026, Erdoğmuş competed in the Clash of Generations III match against former FIDE World Champion Veselin Topalov in Monte Carlo. He dominated the match with a 5–1 score, winning four games and drawing two. This performance pushed his live classical rating to 2709.4, officially crossing the 2700 threshold on the May 2026 FIDE rating list.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Erdoğmuş is a concrete, computer-era calculator whose playing style balances aggressive, sharp tactical vision with a remarkably mature positional understanding. He calculates with exceptional speed and precision, traits that make him highly dangerous in tactical skirmishes and extremely resilient in time scrambles. His games often feature deep, engine-backed preparation that targets concrete, dynamic weaknesses in his opponent's camp.
Erdoğmuş treats king safety with a high degree of pragmatism; he is comfortable defending slightly compromised structures if he receives dynamic counterplay or active piece play in return. He handles space advantages and pawn structures with classical efficiency, yet he is entirely willing to enter highly asymmetrical, double-edged pawn structures to maintain the initiative.
In terms of material tendencies, Erdoğmuş possesses excellent technique in queenless middlegames and simplified positions. He is highly proficient at coordinating the bishop pair, utilizing active minor pieces to exploit holes in the opponent’s pawn structure. He demonstrated his conversion skills and technical endgame mastery in his Clash of Generations II match against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, where he executed a clean victory in the Ruy Lopez Exchange Variation by steadily converting a kingside pawn majority. Additionally, in his victory over Arjun Erigaisi at the 2026 Tata Steel Masters, Erdoğmuş transitioned a complicated English Opening middlegame into a winning endgame, navigating a bishop-versus-knight imbalance and converting active passed rook pawns with absolute precision. His defensive identity is characterized by active resistance rather than passive blockading, searching for dynamic counter-chances even in structurally inferior positions.
