Overview
Andreas Kelires (born 1 July 1999 in Nicosia, Cyprus) is a Grandmaster representing Cyprus. He achieved his FIDE Grandmaster title in 2016 at the age of 17, making him the first player in Cypriot chess history to earn the GM title. He reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2543 in December 2021. Primarily an active tournament and team player, Kelires has established himself as his home country's leading chess figure, transitioning from a highly successful junior career that included consecutive national championships to a stable presence in European team events and open tournaments.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Kelires began playing chess at the age of seven in Heraklion, Crete, where his family had settled. Representing the Cyprus Chess Federation in his youth, he quickly emerged as a standout talent. At just 13 years old, he won the Cypriot Chess Championship in 2013, repeating the feat in 2014 to become a two-time national champion before his mid-teens.
His rapid ascent was highlighted by a victory in the first round of the 3rd Isthmia International Open (Group A) in August 2013. The 14-year-old Kelires, then rated 2075, defeated the highly experienced Ukrainian Grandmaster Sergey Fedorchuk (rated 2669) with the black pieces in a sharp Sicilian Najdorf. He earned his International Master (IM) title in 2015, meeting the 2400 rating threshold with a victory over GM Tamir Nabaty at the 1st Eftychios Krommydakis International Open. That same year, he finished as the runner-up in the European Under-16 Championship behind Leonid Sawlin.
Kelires secured his Grandmaster title in 2016, earning his norms over a two-year period:
- First GM norm: 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway, scoring 9/11.
- Second GM norm: 1st Chania Open in Greece (April 2015), where he finished first with 7.5/9.
- Third GM norm: 32nd Mitropa Cup in Romania (June 2016), scoring 6.5/9.
He crossed the 2500 rating threshold following a performance at the 25th Kavala Open in July–August 2016, leading to the official GM title ratification at the 87th FIDE Congress in September 2016.
Shortly after earning his title, Kelires transferred his federation affiliation to Greece in September 2016, coinciding with his enrollment at the National Technical University of Athens, from which he graduated in 2024. During his decade representing Greece, he competed in the Greek Team Championship, took fourth place in the 66th Greek Chess Championship in 2017, and reached a peak rating of 2543 in December 2021. In early 2026, Kelires returned to the Cyprus Chess Federation, resuming his role as the country's highest-rated active player.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Kelires is a concrete, computer-era calculator whose style leans toward active positional chess, characterized by high tactical vigilance and deep theoretical preparation. He demonstrates a strong preference for complex, asymmetric middlegames, often steering the game toward positions where king safety is compromised on both sides. In such double-edged scenarios—most notably in his Black defenses against 1.e4—he exhibits defensive resilience and a sharp counter-offensive instinct, exploiting opponent overextensions with precise counterattacks.
When playing with a space advantage, particularly in closed structures such as the Catalan or Nimzo-Indian, Kelires handles positional squeeze strategies methodically, utilizing well-timed pawn breaks to open files at opportune moments. He is comfortable accepting minor structural defects, such as isolated or hanging pawns, provided he obtains sufficient piece activity or bishop-pair dynamics to compensate.
In the transition from the middlegame to the endgame, Kelires exhibits strong conversion skills. His endgame technical profile is solid in active rook-and-pawn endgames, where his active king placement and tactical alertness allow him to successfully defend inferior or pawn-down structures. Conversely, he shows high precision when converting small technical advantages in minor-piece endgames, particularly in knight-versus-bishop battlegrounds where he can leverage pawn majorities on opposite wings.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Kelires' primary first move is 1.d4, occasionally utilizing 1.Nf3 to transpose. He is a dedicated practitioner of the Catalan Opening, using it as his main weapon against 1...Nf6 and 2...e6 setups.
-
Catalan Opening (Open Variation): Kelires prefers the dynamic paths of the Open Catalan, where White sacrifices the c4-pawn for rapid queenside development and long-diagonal pressure from the light-squared bishop.
-
Catalan Opening (Closed Variation): Against solid defensive systems, Kelires employs the Closed Catalan, focusing on a long-term central squeeze.
-
Exchange Slav: Against the Slav Defense, Kelires frequently opts for the symmetric Exchange variation, playing for small, risk-free positional advantages.
-
Grünfeld Defense (5.Bg5 Systems): Against the Grünfeld, Kelires regularly implements the sharp 5.Bg5 line, putting immediate pressure on Black's center.
2. As Black
Kelires employs asymmetric, counter-attacking setups against 1.e4, while favoring hypermodern and Indian defenses against 1.d4.
-
Sicilian Defense (Najdorf Variation): The Najdorf is Kelires' signature weapon against 1.e4, which he plays with deep theoretical knowledge, as demonstrated in his historic victory over Sergey Fedorchuk.
-
Sicilian Defense (Rossolimo & Moscow Attacks): Against White's anti-Sicilian setups involving 3.Bb5, Kelires responds actively:
-
Bogo-Indian Defense: Against 1.d4, Kelires frequently utilizes the Bogo-Indian Defense to steer games toward highly strategic, maneuver-oriented territory.
-
Modern Benoni: As a sharper alternative against 1.d4, Kelires occasionally adopts the Modern Benoni, seeking immediate counterplay on the queenside.
