Brandon Jacobson (born November 14, 2003) is an American chess grandmaster (GM) who officially received his title in 2020 at the age of 16. Representing the United States, Jacobson achieved his peak classical FIDE rating of 2599 in November 2025. He is primarily active as a professional tournament player, open Swiss competitor, and opening theoretician, having progressed rapidly through the national scholastic ranks and junior circuits before securing prominent placements in elite open events.

Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Jacobson was introduced to chess at the age of four, mentored in part by his older brother, International Master (IM) Aaron Jacobson. He grew up in Westfield, New Jersey, where he was homeschooled and was accepted to Columbia University at age 14.

Jacobson’s junior career featured strong finishes on the continental stage, starting with a gold medal at the 2014 North American Youth Under-12 Championship, which earned him the Candidate Master (CM) title. In 2016, he won the Barber National Tournament of K-8 Champions. He subsequently secured the FIDE Master (FM) title by winning the North American Youth Under-16 Championship in 2017. He earned the International Master (IM) title in 2018, crossing the 2400 FIDE rating threshold during the Philadelphia International after defeating IM Gabriel Flom.

In May 2024, Jacobson gained wide online attention under the pseudonym "Viih_Sou," employing highly unorthodox double-rook pawn openings (specifically 1.a4 and 2.Ra3) in high-level blitz play. In December 2024, at the over-the-board FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in New York, Jacobson utilized 1.a4 to defeat world elite GM Hikaru Nakamura in 47 moves.
