Overview

Casper Schoppen (born March 21, 2002) is a Dutch chess grandmaster representing the Netherlands. Officially awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE in 2020 at the age of 18, Schoppen reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2589 in May 2026. He is a highly competitive open tournament and league specialist who is known for his sharp tactical capabilities, having achieved a world-record score in the online Puzzle Rush format in 2019, and is a key team player in the German Chess Bundesliga and the Dutch Meesterklasse.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, Schoppen emerged as one of the country's prominent junior talents. In May 2019, he gained international attention in the online chess community by setting a world record in "Puzzle Rush" on Chess.com with a score of 70. Shortly after, in July 2019, Schoppen won the Open Dutch Championship (Open Nederlands Kampioenschap) in Dieren at the age of 17, becoming the youngest winner in the event's history. Later that year, in November, he claimed the Dutch Blitz Championship title.

Schoppen's path to the Grandmaster title culminated in early 2020. In February 2020, he won the Open section of the Daniël Noteboom Memorial Tournament in Leiden. In March 2020, he secured his third and final GM norm by winning the 4th New Chess Brains Turnier in Hamburg with a score of 6.5/9, finishing a full point ahead of GM Dmitrij Kollars. FIDE officially ratified his Grandmaster title later that year.

In September 2020, Schoppen participated in the European Online Youth Chess Championship, finishing second in the Open U18 section with 7/9 on tiebreaks behind Andrey Esipenko to claim the silver medal. He continued to build his tournament resume with a victory at the III Open Internacional CA Monteolivete in Valencia in July 2023, scoring 7.5/9 to win on tiebreaks.

In December 2023, Schoppen competed in the European Rapid Chess Championship in Zagreb, Croatia. Entering the final round tied for first place on 8.5/10 alongside Haik Martirosyan, Alexey Sarana, and Bogdan-Daniel Deac, Schoppen played a marathon 119-move game against Sarana, eventually losing in a double-knight versus bishop-pair endgame. He finished fourth overall in the championship.

In June 2025, Schoppen tied for first place alongside Liam Vrolijk and Eelke de Boer with a score of 6.5/9 in the IM/GM round-robin at the 17th BPB Limburg Open. In October 2025, he claimed first place at the 4th Hvar Open in Croatia with an 8/9 score. He followed this with another open success at the XXXVI Międzynarodowy Festiwal Szachowy Cracovia 2025 (held over December 2025 and January 2026), where a final-round victory secured him clear first place.

• Dutch Meesterklasse: Plays for the first team of the Kennemer Combinatie, helping the squad win the national championship in 2024.
