Overview

Jan Gustafsson is a German chess Grandmaster born on June 25, 1979. Representing the German Chess Federation (GER), he was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 1999 and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2003. Gustafsson achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2652 in November 2010, which positioned him at world number 85. Known for his extensive theoretical knowledge, he is highly prominent as an opening specialist, team player, elite second, and national team trainer. He has served as an opening coach for world-class players—including Magnus Carlsen during three of his World Championship matches—and was appointed the head coach of the German men's national team in April 2023.

Gustafsson's competitive chess career began in Germany. He won the German Under-13 Team Championship in 1992, followed by the German Under-15 Championship in 1994. In 1996, he secured both the German Under-17 Individual Championship and the German Under-20 Team Championship. He won the Open Dutch U20 Youth Championship in 1997 and 1998.

In 1999, Gustafsson achieved his IM title and secured first place at the 10th NATO Chess Championship with an individual score of 6.5/7. After attaining his GM title in 2003, he achieved back-to-back second-place finishes in the German Chess Championship in 2004 and 2005. Earlier, in 2001, he had won the German Blitz Championship.

At the international level, Gustafsson tied for second place at the prestigious Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting in 2008, finishing a full point ahead of former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik. In 2010, he tied for first place at the Gibraltar Masters, finishing with a tournament performance rating of 2769. He won the Bangkok Chess Club Open twice: first in 2011 on a tiebreak over Nigel Short and Francisco Vallejo Pons, and again in 2019 on a tiebreak over Deep Sengupta.

As an opening theoretician, Gustafsson worked as a second for GM Peter Leko and as an opening specialist for Magnus Carlsen during his World Championship matches in 2016 (against Sergey Karjakin), 2018 (against Fabiano Caruana), and 2021 (against Ian Nepomniachtchi). He coached the Danish national team at the 2010 Chess Olympiad. FIDE awarded him the title of FIDE Senior Trainer in 2018. In April 2023, the German Chess Federation appointed him as the head trainer for the men's national team.
