Leon Luke Mendonca

Overview

Leon Luke Mendonca (born March 13, 2006) is an Indian chess grandmaster from Goa, representing the All India Chess Federation (IND). He was officially awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE in January 2021, making him the second grandmaster from his home state and the 67th from India. Mendonca reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2643 in March 2025. Trained under the mentorship of the Westbridge Anand Chess Academy (WACA) and coach Vishnu Prasanna, Mendonca is recognized as a highly active tournament competitor with sharp tactical calculation and deep positional understanding.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Mendonca’s competitive development progressed rapidly after he earned the Candidate Master title in 2013 and achieved the International Master (IM) title in 2019 at the age of 12 years, 11 months, and 3 days.

In March 2020, Mendonca and his father Lyndon were stranded in Eastern Europe due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Over the subsequent nine months, he competed continuously in European round-robins and open events, scoring his three Grandmaster norms in quick succession:

• First GM Norm: Achieved at the Rigochess Grandmaster tournament in Hungary in October 2020.
• Second GM Norm: Secured 21 days later at the First Saturday GM tournament in Budapest in November 2020.
• Third GM Norm: Earned in December 2020 by finishing second at the Vergani Cup in Bassano del Grappa, Italy.

He officially completed his Grandmaster title requirements on December 30, 2020, at the age of 14 years, 9 months, and 17 days.
