Overview
Nikita Petrov (born 1 July 1996 in Novorossiysk, Russia) is a grandmaster representing the Montenegro Chess Federation (MNE). Petrov earned his FIDE Master (FM) title in 2012, followed by the International Master (IM) title in 2014, and was officially awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title by FIDE in 2018. He achieved a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2610 in April 2019. Previously representing Russia, Petrov transferred his sport federation to Montenegro in April 2023, where he has since established himself as a leading national competitor, winning back-to-back Montenegrin Chess Championships in 2024 and 2025.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Petrov developed his early chess career in Russia, progressing steadily through regional and national junior events. He achieved his first official FIDE title, FIDE Master, in 2012, and advanced to International Master status in 2014. By 2018, having met all rating and norm requirements, FIDE officially conferred upon him the Grandmaster title.
Petrov’s open tournament career is highlighted by multiple victories at the International Chess Festival Città di Arco Open A in Italy. He won the 38th edition of the tournament in 2016 with a score of 8/9, and subsequently matched this dominant 8/9 score to win the tournament again in both 2017 and 2019.
In 2019, Petrov finished in 17th place at the European Individual Chess Championship in Skopje, scoring 7.5/11. This strong showing qualified him for the FIDE World Cup 2019 in Khanty-Mansiysk, where he was eliminated in the first round by Russian GM Evgeny Tomashevsky. That same year, he tied for 2nd–8th place at the 6th Arica Open in Chile.
In 2021, Petrov won the 17th Ugra Governor's Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, finishing clear first ahead of GMs Dmitry Kokarev and Daniil Lintchevski. He also tied for 2nd–4th place at the Tuapse Open later that year. In 2022, Petrov was one of 43 elite Russian chess players to sign an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, protesting the invasion of Ukraine and expressing solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
Following his federation transfer to Montenegro on 17 April 2023, Petrov instantly became one of the country's premier competitors. In February 2024, he won the national Montenegro Chess Championship in Podgorica, scoring 9/11 and edging out veteran grandmaster Nikola Đukić on tiebreaks. He successfully defended his title at the 2025 Montenegrin Chess Championship, dominating the field to score 9.5/11 (eight wins, three draws) to finish clear first. At the 2026 Montenegrin Championship, Petrov remained in title contention until the final round, where a draw with eventual champion GM Denis Kadrić saw Kadrić secure the title.
In May 2025, Petrov won the Heydar Aliyev Trophy rapid tournament in Portonovi, scoring 7.5/9 and edging out Đukić on tiebreaks. Later that year, Petrov competed in the FIDE World Cup 2025 in Goa, India. In the first round, he won by forfeit against American GM Kirk Ghazarian, but was eliminated in the second round by Uzbek GM Javokhir Sindarov by a score of 0.5–1.5.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Petrov is a universal player whose classical style relies on deep theoretical preparation, structural health, and precise concrete calculation. He is comfortable in both hypermodern flank setups and highly theoretical open systems. His style exhibits a strong sense of positional restriction, frequently choosing systems that lock down his opponent's counterplay before slowly expanding his space advantage.
His theoretical expertise is widely respected; his deep analytical understanding of asymmetrical pawn structures is illustrated by his contribution to the chess literature, having penned the foreword to Alexey Kovalchuk's book, Playing the Grünfeld (2020). This theoretical foundation shows in his own play, where he handles complex, dynamic structures with high structural precision.
Petrov is a tenacious defender in worse positions and possesses refined endgame technique. He is particularly adept in complex major-piece endgames, demonstrating a strong understanding of rook-and-pawn endings. His victory over GM Jorden van Foreest at the 2022 World Blitz Championship showcased his ability to technicalize minute advantages, exploiting slight king-safety deficits and converting pawn-up rook endgames under extreme time pressure.
