Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Korobov is a creative, dynamic, and pragmatic calculator. He avoids rigid, overly dry positional templates in favor of sharp, concrete, and highly unbalanced positions. His play is characterized by a high degree of tactical alertness and an exceptional ability to manage complex middlegames under fast time controls.
In the middlegame, Korobov is willing to tolerate structural weaknesses—such as isolated queen pawns or fractured pawn structures—if they provide active piece play, dynamic counter-chances, or open files for his rooks. He treats king safety with concrete calculation rather than dogmatic safety rules, often allowing his own king to remain in theoretically vulnerable setups to maximize his offensive potential elsewhere. He handles space advantages well, frequently employing timely pawn breaks to crack open his opponent's center or queenside.
In transition to the endgame, Korobov relies on concrete calculation rather than passive defense. While he has humorously remarked on his pragmatic preference for opponents resigning before long grinds, he possesses refined endgame technique. He is particularly effective in active rook endgames and unbalanced minor-piece struggles, specifically knight-versus-bishop endgames where active king placement and passed pawns are the deciding factors.
