Abhimanyu Mishra (born February 5, 2009) is an American chess grandmaster. Representing the United States, Mishra achieved the FIDE Grandmaster title in 2021. On June 30, 2021, at the age of 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days, he became the youngest grandmaster in chess history, breaking a 19-year-old record. Mishra reached a peak classical FIDE rating of 2652 in October 2025. He primarily operates as a highly active tournament professional and established prodigy. Mishra represents a new generation of hyper-prepared, computer-assisted classical players, culminating in historic milestones such as becoming the youngest player to defeat a reigning World Chess Champion in a classical game.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Mishra's competitive chess career began under the guidance of his father, Hemant Mishra, who introduced him to the game at the age of two. He began competing in tournaments at age five. Mishra established multiple age-group milestones within the United States Chess Federation (USCF), becoming the youngest-ever USCF Expert (rating above 2000) in September 2016 at the age of 7 years, 6 months, and 22 days. In 2017, he represented the United States at the World Cadets Chess Championship (Under-8) in Poços de Caldas, Brazil, scoring eight consecutive victories to start the tournament. In April 2018, he became the youngest USCF Master (rating above 2200) at 9 years, 2 months, and 17 days.

Mishra set a world record by earning the International Master (IM) title in November 2019 at the age of 10 years, 9 months, and 20 days. FIDE officially ratified the title in February 2020. In March 2021, Mishra crossed the 2400 classical FIDE rating threshold while tying for first place at the Spring 2021 GM Norm Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina.

To secure the Grandmaster title, Mishra participated in a series of consecutive tournaments in Budapest, Hungary, in the spring and summer of 2021:

• First GM Norm: Achieved in April 2021 at the Vezérképző GM tournament, where he tied for first place with a score of 7/9 and a 2603 performance rating.
• Second GM Norm: Secured in May 2021 by winning the First Saturday GM tournament with a score of 8/9.

Following his title acquisition, Mishra transitioned to elite-level tournaments. In March 2022, he won the Spring Chess Classic Group B in Saint Louis, Missouri, finishing a point ahead of the field. He tied for second place at the Reykjavik Open in April 2022 and was invited to the Chessable Masters online rapid tournament, where he scored individual victories against Grandmasters Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Wei Yi.

In July 2023, Mishra won the U.S. Junior Championship. By late 2025, he entered the FIDE classical top 100 rankings, achieving a peak rating of 2652 and ranking as the 6th highest-rated junior player globally.

On September 8, 2025, during Round 5 of the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Mishra defeated the reigning World Chess Champion Gukesh Dommaraju in a classical game. At 16 years, 7 months, and 3 days old, Mishra became the youngest player in chess history to defeat an incumbent world champion in a classical game, surpassing a 33-year-old record held by Gata Kamsky.
