Biography & Major Career Milestones
Alonso Rosell's competitive chess career began with standout performances in youth categories. In 2004, at age 11, he won the Spanish Under-12 Championship. Later that year, at the World Under-12 Championship, he finished in 5th place, notably recording individual victories over future elite grandmasters Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So. He followed this by winning the Spanish Under-14 Championship in 2006, the Catalonia Youth Championships in both 2008 and 2009, and the Spanish Under-18 Championship in 2009. During this period of rapid junior development, he secured his FIDE Master (FM) title in 2007 and his International Master (IM) title in 2009.
At age 19, Alonso Rosell achieved his first major national milestone by winning the 76th Spanish Absolute Chess Championship in October 2011, held in Arenal d'en Castell, Menorca. He finished tied for first with a score of 7/9 alongside Miguel Illescas, claiming the title on superior tiebreaks. This victory made him the second-youngest player to win the Spanish Absolute Championship, behind only Arturo Pomar. In 2014, he added the Catalonia Absolute Championship to his accolades, defeating Marc Narciso in the final. FIDE officially conferred his Grandmaster title in early 2013.
His most prominent international open victory occurred at the 5th Sunway Sitges Chess Festival in December 2018. Entering the tournament as the 27th seed with a rating of 2524, he scored 8/10 to finish clear first. He secured the title by defeating Romain Edouard in the final round, finishing ahead of an elite field that included former World Championship candidates Vassily Ivanchuk and Dmitry Andreikin. Outside of over-the-board play, Alonso Rosell works as a mathematics graduate, professional coach, and theoretical author, producing highly regarded courses for Chessable and ChessBase.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- German Chess Bundesliga (2022–2026): Represents FC Bayern München on middle and lower boards. In the 2025/26 season, he registered key wins against Grandmaster Borki Predojevic (2560) and Ruben Gideon Koellner (2515), alongside a draw with Gabor Papp (2503).
- Spanish Team Championship (CECLUB): Regularly competes in the División de Honor, representing clubs such as CA Silla.
- European Chess Club Cup: Represented CA Silla and other teams in the 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025 editions. In the 2022 European Club Cup, he matched up against elite opposition on high boards, including a notable game against Gukesh D.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Alonso Rosell plays in a structured, classical positional style heavily informed by concrete calculation, which he attributes to his mathematical academic background. He prioritizes king safety and healthy pawn structures, preferring to accumulate small positional advantages.
His endgame technique is highly developed, particularly in rook endgames and minor-piece conversions. His victory at the 2018 Sunway Sitges Open was decided by his precise, steady conversion of an equal major-piece endgame under time control against Romain Edouard. When playing asymmetrical structures as Black, such as the Benoni or Benko Gambit, Alonso Rosell is highly comfortable accepting structural compromises. He has a deep understanding of standard positional sacrifices—such as exchanging a flank pawn to open lines for his heavy pieces—to generate long-term dynamic counterplay.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Alonso Rosell's White repertoire is based almost exclusively on 1.d4 and 1.Nf3. He is recognized as a premier theoretician on the Catalan Opening, having published multiple comprehensive repertoires on the system. In the Catalan, he seeks to extract micro-advantages by combining queenside space advantages with pressure from the light-squared bishop.

He also employs the London System against standard setups:
2. As Black
As Black, Alonso Rosell's opening repertoire is characterized by a balance of hyper-solid systems against 1.e4 and highly sharp, asymmetrical structures against 1.d4.
-
Against 1.e4: His signature defense is the Caro-Kann. He is a prominent exponent of the system, advocating for Black's structural health and active piece development. In the Advance Variation, he meets the critical pawn push with active bishop development:
