Overview
Dmitry Aleksandrovich Obolenskikh (born September 27, 1985) is a Russian professional chess player who holds the title of International Master (IM), awarded in 2012. Representing the Russian (RUS) federation, Obolenskikh is highly regarded as one of the strongest and highest-rated active non-Grandmasters in the world, having achieved a career-high FIDE classical rating of 2544 in 2020 and 2025. Based in Irkutsk, Siberia, he has a strong competitive profile as a formidable tournament player in national open events, rapid and blitz formats, as well as a prominent trainer, organizer, and national arbiter in regional Siberian chess.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Dmitry Obolenskikh developed his chess career primarily within the Siberian regions of Russia, establishing himself as a preeminent player in the Irkutsk Oblast. After years of consistent competitive success in regional tournaments, he officially earned the International Master (IM) title from FIDE in 2012.
Over the years, Obolenskikh's classical rating climbed steadily, eventually crossing the 2500 threshold and consolidating his place among the elite non-GMs. In December 2015, he achieved a major career milestone by earning a male Grandmaster (GM) norm at the Pavlodar Open in Kazakhstan, a highly competitive open Swiss tournament. He returned to the Pavlodar Open in subsequent years with outstanding results, including winning the event outright in 2017 and sharing first place in the 2019 edition with a score of 7.5/10, alongside Grandmaster Sergei Tiviakov.
On the domestic circuit, Obolenskikh has dominated Siberian chess events. In January 2014, he won the II Superfinal of the Buryatia Chess Championship in Ulan-Ude with an elite score of 8/9, finishing half a point ahead of Grandmaster Anton Shomoev. He has won the Irkutsk Region Championship multiple times and consistently finishes at the top of regional blitz and rapid tournaments, such as the Karyakina Club Cup qualifiers and the Irkutsk State University (ISU) "Classic Blitz".
Beyond individual classical chess, Obolenskikh is a key figure in corporate team leagues and online events. He represents the Angarsk Petrochemical Company (a subsidiary of Rosneft) in the International Online Chess Business League, leading his team to first place in the final tournaments of 2022 and 2023. In 2024 and 2025, he dominated the Rosneft Summer Sports Games and individual corporate blitz leagues, claiming individual gold.
In addition to his play, Obolenskikh is an active chess trainer, organizer, and licensed FIDE National Arbiter. He frequently directs regional events in Irkutsk and conducts training camps for youth and adult players across Siberia.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Obolenskikh is a highly technical and pragmatic player whose style is rooted in classical positional principles, combined with the concrete calculation typical of the modern computer-assisted era. He possesses a deep understanding of standard pawn structures, showing a strong preference for setups where he can nurture a space advantage or exploit subtle structural weaknesses in his opponent's camp.
In middlegame play, Obolenskikh handles typical king safety scenarios with a high degree of defensive reliability. Rather than seeking wild, double-edged tactical brawls, he prefers structured tension, leveraging timely pawn breaks to open files for his heavy pieces. He is particularly comfortable playing with Carlsbad pawn structures, showing great skill in executing minority attacks and handling queenless middlegames where he can slowly grind down opponents.
Obolenskikh's endgame play is one of his primary competitive strengths. He has demonstrated high technical proficiency in rook endgames and opposite-colored bishop endgames, often converting microscopic advantages into full points. His defensive technique in inferior or slightly worse positions is characterized by active defense, where he continuously seeks counterplay rather than settling into passive defense.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Obolenskikh utilizes a varied and theoretically robust repertoire with the white pieces, utilizing both 1.d4 and 1.e4 to keep his opponents off-balance.
When opening with 1.d4, Obolenskikh frequently directs the game toward the Queen's Gambit Declined, particularly utilizing the Exchange Variation to establish a Carlsbad structure:
Against the Sicilian Defence, Obolenskikh often employs the sharp Prins Variation (Venice Attack) as a way to avoid deeply analyzed mainlines while securing a positional edge:
2. As Black
As Black, Obolenskikh prefers structurally solid defenses that offer counterplay, avoiding hyper-aggressive or speculative systems in favor of long-term strategic resilience.
Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the French Defense, with a particular affinity for the sharp Winawer Variation:
He also regularly employs the solid Caro-Kann Defense Exchange Variation:
Against 1.d4, Obolenskikh frequently adopts the Nimzo-Indian Defense, seeking positional complexity and active piece play:
