Overview
Borki Predojević (transliterated as Borki Predojevic) is a Bosnian chess grandmaster born on April 6, 1987. Representing the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) federation, Predojević achieved the International Master (IM) title in 2003 and became his country's youngest-ever Grandmaster (GM), with FIDE officially awarding the title in 2005 after he fulfilled the final requirements in October 2004 at the age of 17. He reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2655 in May 2016. Predojević is recognized as a premier tournament and team player, a distinguished youth prodigy—holding European U12 (1999), European U14 (2001), and World U16 (2003) championships—and an experienced national team captain and FIDE Trainer (certified in 2016).
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Borki Predojević was born in Teslić, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He began playing chess around 1995. During his youth development, he secured multiple junior continental titles representing FR Yugoslavia, including the European Under-12 Championship in 1999 and the European Under-14 Championship in 2001, where he finished ahead of Sergey Karjakin. Following his federation transfer to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2003, Predojević won the World Under-16 Championship in Kallithea, Greece, with a score of 9/11, finishing ahead of future elite grandmasters Evgeny Tomashevsky and Radoslaw Wojtaszek.
Predojević’s title progression was exceptionally rapid. He obtained the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2000, followed by the IM title in 2003. His IM norms were earned at the Third Saturday IM tournament in March 2002 (9/12), the First Saturday IM tournament in July 2002, and the Belgrade "Obrenovac" Open in November 2002. He fulfilled the final requirements for his Grandmaster title on October 30, 2004, at the 36th Chess Olympiad in Calvià, and FIDE officially awarded him the GM title in 2005.
At the international level, Predojević’s tournament achievements include victories at the Open Metalis in Bizovac (2006), the Zagreb Open (2007), the Hit Open in Nova Gorica (2008), and the Acropolis International Open in Athens (2009). He shared second place in the elite double round-robin Bosna Supertournament in Sarajevo in both 2007 (behind Sergei Movsesian) and 2009 (sharing second with Wang Hao, behind Pavel Eljanov). In June 2013, he competed in a high-profile four-game friendly rapid match in Lillehammer against World Champion Magnus Carlsen, which ended in a 2.5–1.5 victory for Carlsen.
Parallel to his playing career, Predojević has established himself as a prominent chess coach. Certified as a FIDE Trainer in 2016, he was appointed head coach of the Austrian national team in 2017. He has also trained top talents, including contributing to the development of Norwegian GM Johan-Sebastian Christiansen.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- Chess Olympiads (2004–2014): Represented Bosnia and Herzegovina in five Chess Olympiads. In his debut at the 36th Chess Olympiad (2004) in Calvià, he played on Board 4 and secured his final GM norm. At the 43rd Chess Olympiad (2018) in Batumi, he transitioned to team leadership, serving as the captain and coach of the Austrian national team.
- European Club Cup:
- 2004 (Izmir): Represented CC "Bosna" Sarajevo, winning a team silver medal.
- 2018 (Porto Carras): Represented Valerenga Chess Club on Board 5, playing alongside Magnus Carlsen, and earned an individual silver medal.
- 2024 (Vrnjacka Banja): Served as captain and coach of the Slovenian club Tajfun, leading their women's team to first place.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Predojević exhibits a classical, universal style rooted in dense positional preparation and deep strategic calculation. Trained under prominent figures such as GM Ivan Sokolov, his games are characterized by meticulous handling of typical middlegame pawn structures and spatial imbalances.
He demonstrates high technical precision in handling the bishop pair and exploiting structural vulnerabilities, such as isolated or backward pawns. Rather than seeking premature tactical complications, he frequently guides positions toward technical endgames where minor advantages can be systematically converted. In defensive situations, Predojević relies on concrete, engine-assisted calculation and active piece play rather than passive resistance. His endgame performance is noted for high-level accuracy in double-rook structures and complex minor-piece endgames, frequently utilizing active king maneuvers to construct fortresses or convert pawn majorities.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Predojević maintains a highly structured, theoretically rigorous opening repertoire. His choices emphasize classical, space-gaining lines as White and asymmetric, counter-attacking structures as Black.
1. As White
Predojević is primarily a 1.e4 player, utilizing space-oriented setups to apply positional pressure from the opening moves.
- Against the Sicilian Defense: He heavily favors the anti-Sicilian Rossolimo and Canal-Sokolsky Attacks to bypass heavy theoretical mainlines of the Open Sicilian. When entering open variations against the Najdorf Sicilian, he frequently adopts the sharp English Attack:
- Against the French Defense: Predojević consistently employs the Advance Variation, establishing a robust central wedge.
- Against the Caro-Kann Defense: He favors the Advance Variation, often utilizing the Short Variation featuring 4.Nf3 to restrict Black's queenside expansion.
- Scotch Game: As an alternative against 1...e5, he utilizes the Scotch Game to enforce immediate central tension.
2. As Black
As Black, Predojević relies heavily on the Philidor Defense and robust Sicilian counter-attacking setups against 1.e4, and solid defensive structures against 1.d4.
- Philidor Defense (The Lion Variation): Predojević is one of the premier modern practitioners and theoreticians of the Philidor Defense, specifically advocating for the Lion Variation to create complex, asymmetric middlegames. Additionally, he has published extensive theoretical surveys on the Exchange Variation of the Philidor, utilizing early queen exchanges to reach technical endgames.
- Sicilian Defense (Kan Variation): When seeking a more dynamic counter-attacking pawn structure against 1.e4, he employs the Kan Variation.
- Against 1.d4: Predojević primarily employs the Slav Defense, maintaining solid central control with the modern quiet lines.
