Gukesh D (Dommaraju Gukesh) is an Indian chess grandmaster born on May 29, 2006, who represents the Indian chess federation (IND). He achieved the Grandmaster title in January 2019 at the age of 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, making him the third-youngest grandmaster in history at the time. Gukesh reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2794 in October 2024. His primary competitive identity is that of a world-class tournament player, double Olympic gold medalist, and the reigning undisputed World Chess Champion, having won the title in December 2024. He currently holds a classical FIDE rating of 2732, a rapid rating of 2682, and a blitz rating of 2646.

Gukesh was introduced to chess at the age of seven in Chennai, India, and rapidly developed his tactical and analytical abilities under early coaching at Velammal Vidyalaya school. In 2015, he earned his Candidate Master (CM) title by winning the Under-9 section of the Asian School Chess Championships. His transition to the International Master (IM) title was exceptionally fast; he secured his three required IM norms within a six-month window, concluding with his final norm at the Cappelle-la-Grande Open in March 2018. Later that year, he won the World Youth Chess Championship in the Under-12 division.

In January 2019, Gukesh fulfilled his final Grandmaster norm at the 17th Delhi International Open, securing the title as the second-youngest GM in history at that moment. From November 25 to December 12, 2024, Gukesh challenged the defending champion Ding Liren in Singapore for the FIDE World Chess Championship. Despite losing the first game, Gukesh rallied to win the match 7.5–6.5 (+3 -2 =9), securing the decisive victory in Game 14 to become the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion in history at 18 years and 195 days old. In June 2025, Gukesh achieved his first classical victory against former world champion Magnus Carlsen during the Norway Chess tournament.
