About
Overview
Nikolas Theodorou (born September 17, 2000) is a Greek Grandmaster (awarded in 2021) and one of the leading representatives of Greece's modern chess generation. He achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2656 in November 2025. Theodorou is a highly accomplished team competitor, highlighted by an individual silver medal at the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai, and has established himself as a formidable Swiss tournament competitor. A graduate of Saint Louis University, he has consistently performed at an elite collegiate level in the United States while developing a reputation as an exceptionally precise calculator and theoretical innovator.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Athens, Theodorou relocated with his family to Rethymno, Crete, in 2006. He began formal chess instruction at the Chess Club of Rethymno in 2007 and progressed to the Chania Chess Academy in 2015. His junior career was marked by dominant national performances, winning his respective age group at the Greek Chess Championships five times. Theodorou secured the International Master (IM) title in 2016 and completed his final Grandmaster (GM) norm in September 2021.
Alongside his professional chess development, Theodorou pursued academic excellence in the United States. He attended Saint Louis University (SLU) on a chess scholarship, graduating with a double major in Physics and Mathematics in May 2022, and subsequently completed a Master's degree in Biostatistics & Health Analytics in August 2024. During this period, he anchored the SLU collegiate chess team, leading them to victory in the prestigious Final Four of the USA Collegiate Chess Championship in 2022.
Theodorou's individual tournament successes have established him as a elite competitor. At the US Masters in November 2024, he finished clear second with a score of 7.5/9, highlighted by a victory over top-seed Fabiano Caruana. In the Sharjah Masters 2024, Theodorou defeated Arjun Erigaisi in 28 moves. At the FIDE Grand Swiss in Samarkand in September 2025, he defeated reigning Candidates winner Gukesh Dommaraju in a highly technical rook endgame. He closed out the 2025 season by winning the XTX Markets London Chess Classic Super Rapidplay with a score of 9/10, securing consecutive wins against Luke McShane, Leinier Dominguez Perez, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov.

- 24th European Team Chess Championship (2023, Budva): Represented Greece, scoring a highly publicized 19-move miniature victory over Teimour Radjabov.
- 21st European Team Chess Championship (2017, Hersonissos): Represented Greece on Board 3, registering a score of (+3, =1, -3) at the age of 17.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Theodorou is a universal player who relies on deep concrete calculation and high-level theoretical preparation. His opening preparation often translates into rapid development and early-middlegame initiative, enabling him to dismantle elite grandmasters in short tactical skirmishes (exemplified by his 19-move win over Teimour Radjabov and 28-move victory over Arjun Erigaisi).
He demonstrates excellent tactical awareness, particularly in managing king safety and launching direct kingside attacks. However, he does not shy away from structural compromises if they yield dynamic pawn activity or active minor pieces. Defensively, Theodorou is resourceful and stubborn in slightly inferior positions, maintaining high defensive resilience.
His endgame technique is structurally rigorous. In highly complex rook-and-pawn endings, Theodorou displays a precise understanding of active rook placement and the coordination of passed pawns. This endgame proficiency was clearly demonstrated in his victory against Gukesh Dommaraju at the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss, where he successfully navigated a pawn-down rook ending to orchestrate a winning advance of his central passed pawns.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Theodorou constructs his White repertoire predominantly around 1.d4 and 1.Nf3, frequently steering games into Catalan setups and flank systems where long-term positional pressure on the queenside is emphasized.
Against lines in the Queen's Gambit Declined or Indian defense setups, Theodorou heavily relies on the Catalan Opening, using a reliable move order to seek minor structural advantages:
When playing 1.e4, Theodorou relies on deep preparation to punish aggressive or speculative lines. Against the Petroff Defense, he utilized an aggressive Steinitz Attack line to dismantle Teimour Radjabov in 2023:
2. As Black
Against 1.e4, Theodorou employs a varied defensive portfolio. His most frequent choice is the Sicilian Defense, particularly preferring the Rossolimo Variation when allowed to generate asymmetric middlegame play:
Theodorou also uses the highly solid Petroff Defense, which served as his weapon to defeat Gukesh Dommaraju in classical play:
A highly notable contribution to modern opening theory is Theodorou's revival of the once-dismissed 5...Nc6 line in the Scandinavian Defense. His deployment of the knight retreat 8...Na6 revolutionized the assessment of the system, transforming it into a viable weapon adopted by other elite grandmasters:
Against 1.d4, Theodorou regularly adopts the King's Indian Defense, utilizing classical and fianchetto lines to establish dynamic counterplaying chances:
