Overview
Volodar Arturovich Murzin (born July 18, 2006) is a Russian-born chess grandmaster who represents the FIDE federation flag (FID). He achieved the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2017, the International Master (IM) title in 2019, and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2022. He achieved a peak classical FIDE rating of 2678 in August 2025, reaching a global ranking of No. 46. Primarily active as a tournament player, Murzin is widely recognized for his rapid and blitz chess strengths, highlighted by his victory at the 2024 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship, which established him as the second-youngest rapid champion in chess history.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Nizhny Tagil, Russia, Murzin joined a formal chess club at age seven and a half. In 2017, at the age of 11, he began a long-term professional association with his coach, Grandmaster Mikhail Kobalia. That same year, he earned the FIDE Master title and finished tied for first place in the World Cadets U12 Championship in Brazil, ultimately taking third place after tiebreak rules were applied. In 2018, Murzin won the U12 European Youth Chess Championship in Riga, Latvia, finishing with an undefeated score of 8/9.
In 2019, Murzin earned the International Master title at age 13. He claimed his first major national junior title on December 8, 2020, by winning the Russian Junior (U21) Championship.
In 2021, Murzin qualified for the FIDE World Cup in Sochi. In the opening round, he defeated experienced Moldovan Grandmaster Viorel Iordăchescu by a score of 3.5–2.5 before being eliminated in the second round by Vladislav Artemiev. He concluded 2021 with a fourth-place finish in the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour.
He completed his Grandmaster requirements in late 2022. His progression was briefly interrupted by legal disputes regarding a travel ban placed by his father, a hurdle that was successfully overturned in court, allowing him to resume international travel. Since January 2023, Murzin has competed under the neutral FIDE flag. At the 2023 World Rapid Championship in Samarkand, he placed tied for third (finishing fifth on tiebreaks) with an undefeated 9/13.
In December 2024, Murzin achieved his most significant professional milestone by winning the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in New York City. Entering the tournament as the 59th seed, he finished clear first with an undefeated score of 10/13. His tournament run included victories over Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu. He secured the world title with a final-round draw against Karen H. Grigoryan, becoming the second-youngest World Rapid Champion in history, after Nodirbek Abdusattorov in 2021. Days later, he tied for first at the 2024 World Blitz Chess Championship, finishing just outside the playoff spots due to tiebreak criteria.
In May 2025, Murzin tied for first place in the LVIII Capablanca Memorial Elite Group in Havana, Cuba, scoring 5.5/8 alongside Jonas Buhl Bjerre. In November 2025, he competed in the KazChess Masters in Almaty, leading the field for seven rounds before finishing tied for second place with 5.5/9.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Murzin represents a technical, concrete, and highly disciplined style characteristic of structured classical training. Rather than relying on speculative tactical shots, his play is built on deep calculation, sound pawn structures, and long-term positional pressure.
Murzin has noted that his tactical vision, imagination, and resourcefulness under pressure are his primary competitive strengths. He handles king safety pragmatically, as demonstrated in his critical victory over Praggnanandhaa in the 2024 World Rapid Championship, where he navigated a highly double-edged endgame with an active, deep-board king march to secure the win.
Positionally, Murzin is comfortable grinding out small advantages and excels in technical minor-piece endgames. He displays extreme defensive resilience, maintaining composure and showing high technical proficiency in holding slightly inferior or pawn-down endgames against world-class opposition.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Murzin employs a highly flexible and modern opening repertoire that is optimized for both classical and rapid time controls.
1. As White
Murzin splits his first-move choices between 1.e4 and 1.d4, often incorporating flanking systems to sidestep heavily analyzed computer lines.
Against the Sicilian Defense, he frequently avoids open Sicilian theory, preferring lines with an early bishop check to restrict Black's counterplay:
Against the Caro-Kann Defense, he regularly employs the Exchange Variation, striving for a clear positional plan and central control:
When playing 1.d4, he is comfortable in classical systems. Against the Nimzo-Indian Defense, he frequently selects lines with early bishop activity:
He also employs the Jobava London System as a dynamic weapon to catch opponents off guard:
2. As Black
As Black, Murzin seeks reliable defensive complexes that provide active counterplay.
Against 1.e4, his primary counter-offensive is the Sicilian Najdorf, which provides the asymmetrical imbalances necessary to play for a win:
He also utilizes the Caro-Kann Defense as a highly resilient secondary choice, favoring the Advance Variation:
Against 1.d4, his main defensive choice is the Semi-Slav Defense, relying on a solid central foundation with options for active piece play:
Alternatively, he plays the standard Slav Defense, accepting a symmetrical structure in exchange for early piece activity:
