Overview
Salem Abdulrahman Mohamed Saleh (registered with FIDE under the name Salem, A.R. Saleh) is an Emirati chess grandmaster born on January 4, 1993, in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Representing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) federation, Salem earned the International Master (IM) title in 2008 and achieved the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2009 at the age of 16. His career-high classical FIDE rating is 2690, which he reached in October 2021. As the top-rated chess player in the UAE, Salem's competitive identity is defined as a dominant national and continental champion, a formidable rapid and blitz specialist, and the anchor of his country's national team in major international events.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Salem developed his chess foundations in Sharjah under the guidance of Latvian Grandmaster Edvīns Ķeņģis. During his youth career, he was widely regarded as a premier talent in the Arab world, winning three consecutive Arab Under-10 Championships from 2001 to 2003, the Arab Under-12 Championship in 2004, and the Arab Under-16 Championship in 2005 and 2006. On the continental level, he secured gold medals at the Asian Youth Chess Championships in the Under-14 (2007), Under-16 (2008), and Under-18 (2009) categories.
At the senior national level, Salem captured the Emirati Chess Championship in 2008, 2011 (with a perfect 9/9 score), and 2012. He also established himself regionally by winning the Arab Chess Championship in 2008, 2014, and 2018. Salem secured his three GM norms in tournaments across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah between April and December 2008, leading FIDE to officially award him the Grandmaster title in March 2009.
In August 2015, in Al Ain, Salem claimed a major double victory by winning both the Asian Individual Chess Championship and the Asian Individual Blitz Chess Championship. Two years later, he tied for first place in the 1st Sharjah Masters International Championship in 2017. He has consistently represented the UAE at the global level, qualifying for the FIDE World Cup in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2021, 2023, and 2025. In February 2026, Salem played a highly contested 12-game head-to-head match titled "Battle of the Minds" against American Grandmaster Awonder Liang in Sharjah, finishing with a narrow 7.5–8.5 defeat.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Salem is a dynamic, tactical calculator who prefers sharp, asymmetrical positions. Rather than steering games toward quiet, positional structures, he actively seeks the initiative and is highly comfortable with double-edged complications. His approach to king safety is concrete; he often engages in lines where both kings are exposed, trusting his calculation to find key attacking tempos.
Salem is highly receptive to material imbalances, particularly speculative sacrifices. A notable demonstration of his tactical creativity occurred at the 2024 Sharjah Masters against Vladimir Fedoseev, where Salem launched a highly calculated combination involving a rook sacrifice followed by a queen sacrifice to force a checkmate.
In the endgame, Salem emphasizes piece activity over passive material defense. In rook endgames, he prioritizes king activation and the promotion of advanced passed pawns, often utilizing these active factors to convert minor advantages into wins. His tactical sharpness and rapid calculation make him highly effective in time scrambles, which is reflected in his high-level rapid and blitz performances.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Salem's white repertoire centers primarily on queen's pawn openings starting with 1. d4. He leans toward ambitious mainlines designed to pressure Black's theoretical understanding.
Against 1...d5, Salem frequently chooses the Exchange Variation of the Queen's Gambit Declined, striving for Carlsbad pawn structures where he can coordinate queenside minority attacks or prepare central breaks:
In the Slav Defense, he commonly employs mainlines with 3. Nf3 and 4. Nc3, retaining central flexibility:
Against 1...Nf6 and 2...e6, Salem is a long-time practitioner of the Sämisch Variation of the Nimzo-Indian Defense, accepting doubled c-pawns to construct a broad pawn center and create attacking chances on the kingside:
Against the King's Indian Defense, he frequently employs the Makagonov System (5. h3), limiting Black's light-squared bishop options while setting up central expansion:
2. As Black
As Black, Salem avoids passive defensive frameworks, selecting highly combative lines that offer immediate counterplay and asymmetrical structures.
Against 1. e4, his primary defensive weapon is the Sicilian Defense, with a heavy emphasis on the Najdorf Variation:
When facing Anti-Sicilians such as the Moscow Attack, Salem relies on standard setups to neutralize White's light-squared bishop and establish central stability:
Alternatively, against 2...Nc6, he handles the Rossolimo Attack with active counter-development:
Against 1. d4, Salem utilizes the King's Indian Defense to initiate complex kingside play:
He also employs the Grünfeld Defense, immediately challenging White's center with active piece play and pawn pressure:
