Biography & Major Career Milestones
Flores was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, and raised in Junín, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. He demonstrated high-level junior talent early, notably finishing as runner-up in the World Youth Chess Championship Under-16 category at Oropesa del Mar in 1998. In 2001, he won the Argentine Junior Chess Championship. He earned his International Master (IM) title in 2003, followed by the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2008.
Flores' national career is marked by unparalleled consistency in the Argentine Chess Championship, which he won in 2005, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019, and most recently in the centenary 100th edition of the tournament in December 2025. His eighth national title tied the historic record held by Miguel Najdorf.
On the international circuit, Flores won the 2nd Magistral Marcel Duchamp round-robin tournament in Buenos Aires in 2010 on tiebreaks over Sandro Mareco. The same year, his achievements were recognized with the Konex Award Merit Diploma as one of the top five Argentine chess players of the 2000–2009 decade. In 2011, he tied for first at the 2nd Latin American Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay, finishing second on tiebreaks to Alexandr Fier. In 2012, he tied for first at the American Continental Championship in Mar del Plata.
One of his most significant open tournament achievements occurred in April 2018, when he won the Dubai Open Chess Championship with a score of 7.5/9, securing clear first place by defeating Surya Shekhar Ganguly in the final round. In January 2026, he shared first place at the 3rd International ITT Festival Ciudad de Temuco in Chile, finishing second on tiebreaks to José "Pepe" Cuenca. Beyond active play, Flores has written a weekly chess column for the Junín newspaper Diario Democracia since 2004.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Flores is classified as an enterprising, dynamic player who thrives in complex, unbalanced positions. He combines modern computer-era concrete calculation with a deep understanding of structural and material transformations.
Flores is highly comfortable accepting material imbalances. A notable feature of his middlegame play is his willingness to execute early or speculative exchange sacrifices to gain long-term positional compensation or to seize the initiative. This was demonstrated in his crucial final-round victory against Surya Shekhar Ganguly at the 2018 Dubai Open, where he offered an exchange sacrifice on move 14 to dismantle Black’s defensive setup and establish a dominant passed pawn structure.
His treatment of king safety is concrete rather than passive; he is willing to accept structurally compromised positions or open files around his own king if it grants him active counterplay. In defensive scenarios, Flores relies on tactical resources and active piece play to construct counter-opportunities rather than transitioning into passive defensive passivity.
In the endgame, Flores demonstrates strong technical conversion, particularly in rook-and-pawn endgames where king activity is paramount, and in minor-piece endgames where a knight must compete against a bishop on single-flank structures.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Flores’ opening repertoire as White is dominated by flank setups, with a heavy reliance on the English Opening. He utilizes lines that lead to structured positional squeezing or dynamic middlegame play.
In the Symmetrical English, Flores frequently employs the standard lines targeting central control:
Against 1...e5, he regularly enters the Reversed Sicilian setups, looking for active piece play in the center:
Flores also employs the Reti Opening to bypass heavy theoretical main lines while retaining structural flexibility:
2. As Black
As Black, Flores historically favors dynamic defenses that allow for sharp counterplay and asymmetrical structures.
Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the Sicilian Defence, with a strong preference for the Kan (or Paulsen) Variation, which offers structural flexibility and limits White's direct attacking lines:
Against 1.d4, Flores' classical defense of choice is the King's Indian Defense, a highly theoretical and double-edged opening matching his dynamic style:
In lines where White opts for a kingside fianchetto, Flores is well-versed in the Yugoslav Variation of the Fianchetto King's Indian:
