He fulfilled his first Grandmaster norm in July 2014 during an open tournament in Barcelona, Spain. His second norm came in April 2017 when he won the South American Under-20 Championship (Sudamericano Sub20) in Manta, Ecuador, scoring 7.5 points out of 9. Martínez Alcántara secured his third and final Grandmaster norm in September 2017 by winning the World Youth Chess Championship in the Under-18 division in Montevideo, Uruguay. After crossing the 2500 FIDE Elo threshold in January 2018, he was officially awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title in April 2018.
In September 2019, he qualified for the FIDE World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, where he was eliminated in the first round by Dmitry Jakovenko. Later that year, he tied for 2nd–8th place at the 6th Arica Open. In 2021, Martínez Alcántara tied for first place at the U.S. Masters Chess Championship.

In June 2024, he participated in the "Clash of Claims" blitz match in Madrid against former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik. Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Martínez Alcántara is a dynamic, concrete calculator whose playing style is heavily influenced by his exceptional speed and tactical accuracy, traits characteristic of a world-class rapid and blitz specialist. He operates with high efficiency in sharp, asymmetric middlegames where quick calculation and piece activity take precedence over static pawn structure considerations. He maintains excellent king safety, using deep tactical defensive structures to absorb pressure before launching sharp counter-attacks.
When playing with space advantages, Martínez Alcántara prefers active piece coordination to create concrete threats rather than purely positional constriction. His material imbalances often feature active minor piece play, and he is highly comfortable playing in queenless middlegames or transitionary endgames where minor-piece activity compensates for slight structural defects. In the endgame, he is noted for his defensive resourcefulness in worse positions, particularly in active rook endgames and technical knight-versus-bishop endings where active king participation and piece coordination are paramount.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Martínez Alcántara's opening choices are highly customized for practical value, focusing on setups that minimize long theoretical debates while providing rich dynamic play.
