Biography & Major Career Milestones
Chigaev developed his chess career in Russia, achieving early success in national and international youth events. In 2012, he represented the Russian national team at the World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad in Kemer, Turkey. Chigaev won the individual gold medal on board two and led the team to a gold medal finish. The same year, he won individual bronze at the World Youth Under-16 Championship. In 2013, he claimed bronze at the European Under-18 Championship and won the Russian Rapid Championship for his age category. He followed these successes by winning the Vanya Somov Memorial ("World's Youth Stars") tournament in Kirishi in 2015.
Chigaev’s pursuit of the Grandmaster title culminated in 2016. He completed his first GM norm at the Riga Technical University (RTU) Open in August 2013. He achieved his second norm at the Master Open Alekhine Memorial in Voronezh in June 2016, followed by his third norm back at the RTU Open in August 2016. FIDE officially conferred the title in September 2016.
From 2016 onward, Chigaev established himself as a robust international open and round-robin competitor. He won the Mashhad Open in both 2016 (jointly) and 2017, the Groningen Open in 2016, the Alekhine Memorial in 2017, and the Paul Keres Memorial in 2018. In January 2019, he finished tied for second place with Andrey Esipenko and Benjamin Gledura at the Tata Steel Challengers in Wijk aan Zee. Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Chigaev identifies himself as a universal player whose main priority is versatility across all types of middlegame structures. Guided by concrete computer-era calculation, he balances safety and dynamic piece play. Rather than taking excessive risks on the kingside, he favors structured and clean technical transitions, positioning his king safely while optimizing the coordinate control of his minor pieces.
His material preferences tend towards active minor-piece play and rook dynamics. In the middlegame, he is highly comfortable handling the bishop pair or orchestrating central pawn breaks to transform the pawn structure. When defending inferior positions, Chigaev relies on stubborn resourcefulness, seeking tactical counter-chances to create counterplay. His technical endgame skills are highly polished, allowing him to squeeze full points from minor endgame advantages or establish robust fortresses when down material.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders

Chigaev primarily opens with 1.e4, although he occasionally employs the English Opening (1.c4).

He also turns to the Scotch Game as an alternative to test his opponent's central theoretical knowledge:
When facing the Sicilian Defense (1...c5), Chigaev extensively employs the anti-Sicilian Rossolimo Attack, seeking positional play:
Against the Najdorf Sicilian, he is prepared to contest the main lines, using systems involving 6.Be3:
Against the Caro-Kann Defense (1...c6), he typically relies on the Advance Variation to secure a space advantage:
2. As Black
Against 1.e4, Chigaev relies on the Sicilian Defense, particularly favoring the Taimanov Variation for its flexibility:
He also has extensive experience on the black side of the Sicilian Najdorf:
Against 1.d4, Chigaev frequently plays the King's Indian Defense to create sharp, unbalanced middlegames:
Alternatively, he employs the Grünfeld Defense, contesting the center immediately with dynamic pawn breaks:
