His ascendancy continued in 2022, a milestone year during which he achieved his final grandmaster norms, tied for first at the Clichy Open and the Cappelle-la-Grande Open, and officially received the Grandmaster title from FIDE. Shortly after, he reached his peak classical rating of 2556 in April 2022. He also finished third at the Târgu Mureș Open in June 2022.
In 2023, Petrov tied for second place in the Bulgarian Chess Championship, ultimately finishing fourth on tiebreaks. Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Martin Petrov is a versatile, concrete modern player who combines positional discipline with calculated tactical sharpness. He displays a typical grandmaster profile of the computer era, characterized by deep opening preparation and high-precision tactical calculation. Petrov handles space advantages with care, often seeking clear structures where he can slowly grind down opponents or exploit minor pawn weaknesses.
In worse positions, Petrov is a tenacious defender, maintaining active piece play to create counter-chances rather than resorting to passive resistance. He transitions smoothly from the opening to technical middlegames and exhibits strong endgame technique. He is particularly effective in minor-piece endgames and equal or slightly inferior rook endgames, demonstrating a capacity to hold drawish endgames against higher-rated players through active king placement and precise pawn play.
