Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Ter-Sahakyan exhibits a universal, classical playing style deeply rooted in the analytical traditions of the Armenian school of chess. He operates with a high degree of structural discipline, often steering positions toward complex, strategic struggles where his calculation and positional planning can be fully realized.
In the transition from the opening to the middlegame, he often aims for central space advantages and structural stability. Rather than relying on speculative king attacks, Ter-Sahakyan prefers methodical operations involving central pawn breaks and minor-piece maneuvers to isolate opponent weaknesses.
His endgame profiling reveals a high level of technical proficiency, particularly in converting marginal advantages in queenless middlegames and minor-piece endings. A notable example is his round 9 victory against GM Ziaur Rahman at the 2019 Goa Open, where he systematically liquidated a complex middle game into a highly favorable minor-piece ending to grind out a win. Ter-Sahakyan is equally proficient in active defense, showing great resilience in slightly worse endgame structures by maintaining active rook play and creating counter-chances via passed pawns.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Ter-Sahakyan is recognized for his highly theoretical opening preparation, often testing and refining lines in both high-level classical events and competitive online environments.
1. As White
Ter-Sahakyan's primary choice is 1.e4.
Against the Sicilian Defense, he meets the Najdorf Variation with the English Attack, characterized by early f3, Be3, and Qd2 setups aiming for mutual kingside and queenside advances:
Against 2...Nc6 setups, he regularly plays the Nyezhmetdinov-Rossolimo Attack:
Against the Open Games (1...e5), he is a noted specialist and co-author of theoretical material on the Scotch Game, advocating direct central pressure:
He also employs classical lines of the Closed Ruy Lopez, including anti-Marshall setups with an early a4:
Against the Caro-Kann Defense, he utilizes the Advance Variation, steering into the positional mainlines of the Short Variation:
2. As Black
Against 1.e4, Ter-Sahakyan relies on the sharp Sicilian Najdorf as his primary defensive weapon, seeking asymmetric counterplay and complex middlegame structures:
Against 1.d4, he employs solid, classical defensive systems. He frequently utilizes the Ragozin Defense of the Queen's Gambit Declined to achieve active piece play and pressure the white center:
He also relies on the Semi-Slav Defense, particularly utilizing the D46 systems:
