Overview
Christopher Woojin Yoo (born December 19, 2006) is an American chess grandmaster (GM) representing the United States. He attained the International Master (IM) title in 2019 and was awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE in 2022. Primarily active as a tournament professional, Yoo emerged as one of the premier American prodigies of his generation, claiming multiple national junior titles. He achieved a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2616 in August 2024. Yoo's competitive career is characterized by concrete tactical calculation and deep preparation in sharp theoretical structures, though his trajectory has also been affected by high-profile disciplinary suspensions.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Yoo's rise as a junior talent began in northern California. On November 19, 2016, at the age of 9 years and 336 days, he became the youngest player in United States Chess Federation (USCF) history to achieve the national Master rating. In 2017, he earned his FIDE Master (FM) title by scoring 7/9 in the Under-16 section of the North American Youth Chess Championship. He fulfilled his requirements for the International Master title in early 2019 at the age of 12, which established him as the youngest IM in U.S. history at that time. In 2020, Yoo won the U.S. Cadet (Under-16) Championship.
Yoo achieved his three grandmaster norms in a rapid succession during 2021:
- First GM Norm: May 2021, at the Memorial Day CCCSA GM Norm Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he tied for first place with GM Péter Prohászka.
- Second GM Norm: September 2021, at the Labor Day CCCSA GM Norm Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina, which he won outright.
- Third GM Norm: November 2021, at the U.S. Masters in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he finished tied for third.
On December 12, 2021, during the Marshall Chess Club Championship, Yoo raised his classical FIDE rating above the 2500 threshold, completing the final requirement for the Grandmaster title at 14 years and 358 days. FIDE officially approved the title in 2022.
In July 2022, Yoo won the U.S. Junior Championship in Saint Louis, Missouri, with a score of 7/9, finishing a full point ahead of the field. Later that year, he won the 2022 U.S. Masters. In 2023, he finished tied for second place at the American Continental Championship in El Salvador, which qualified him for the 2023 FIDE World Cup. Yoo claimed his second U.S. Junior Championship in July 2024 with a 7/9 score, earning qualification for the U.S. Chess Championship.
His career experienced a major disruption during the 2024 U.S. Chess Championship. Following a fifth-round loss to Fabiano Caruana on October 16, 2024, Yoo was expelled from the tournament and subsequently suspended for one year by the USCF for striking a tournament videographer. While serving his domestic suspension, Yoo competed in the Sardinia World Chess Festival in Italy in April–May 2025, winning the tournament outright and undefeated with a score of 7½/9. However, after a separate complaint was lodged concerning multiple violations of inappropriate conduct and harassment toward a female competitor in Europe, the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) issued an 18-month ban on July 17, 2025, with 12 months suspended under probation. The active six-month FIDE suspension expired on January 17, 2026. Yoo returned to active tournament competition in late January 2026 at the Kushnir Memorial Tournament at the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club in San Francisco, California.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Yoo is a concrete, computer-era calculator who employs a highly dynamic and sharp style. He is comfortable in strategically asymmetrical, double-edged middlegames and actively seeks concrete tactical complexities over quiet maneuvering.
Yoo approaches king safety concretely rather than dogmatically. He routinely castling into areas with semi-open files or facing direct pawn storms, relying on precise defensive calculation or counter-attacks to maintain balance. Instead of passive defense, Yoo regularly uses active pawn breaks and dynamic counterplay. He is willing to enter sharp imbalances, such as committing to long-term pawn structure weaknesses or employing active exchange sacrifices to seize the initiative (as seen in his dynamic exchange sacrifice against Arthur Guo in the 2024 U.S. Junior Championship).
Yoo has demonstrated highly refined endgame technique. He is capable of converting minute advantages in queenless middlegames and technical endgames, particularly in rook-and-pawn endings and complex rook-and-minor-piece endings. His deep endgame visualization is further evidenced by his activities in chess composition. In 2019, he finished third in the endgame studies category at the FIDE World Cup in Composing and won the Youth (Under-23) Chess Composing Challenge, demonstrating a sophisticated conceptual understanding of exact geometric studies and defensive fortresses.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
With the White pieces, Yoo maintains a versatile and theoretically intense repertoire, utilizing both 1.e4 and 1.d4.
When playing 1.e4, Yoo prefers aggressive, sharp mainlines. Against the Sicilian Defence, he routinely plays Open systems. Against the Sicilian Najdorf, he employs classical English Attack-style setups:
Against the Caro-Kann Defence, Yoo regularly utilizes the Advance Variation, frequently employing the aggressive Tal Variation featuring an early h-pawn thrust:
When utilizing 1.d4, Yoo has notably adopted the Jobava London System as a primary weapon, which prioritizes rapid development and early queenside piece activity:
Against standard systems, he also deploys the Catalan Opening to establish a structural space advantage:
2. As Black
As Black, Yoo seeks active counter-play and asymmetrical positions.
Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the Sicilian Defence. He regularly utilizes the Taimanov variation, aiming for flexible piece development and a robust pawn center:
Against 1.d4, Yoo employs highly flexible, classically grounded defenses. He relies on the Nimzo-Indian Defence to contest White's central space:
Additionally, he uses the Grünfeld Defence to pressure White's pawn center with early active play:
Against flank openings such as the English Opening (1.c4), Yoo adopts symmetrical lines to equalize through central tension:
