His junior career was marked by strong national and international results, including winning the Russian U12 Championship in 2001. Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Krivoborodov is a positional player with a dynamic edge, combining classical Soviet-school fundamentals with concrete modern calculation. His opening-to-middlegame transitions are characterized by precise structural treatment and a focus on king safety. He is highly proficient in handling pawn structures with spatial advantages, as well as managing isolated queen's pawn (IQP) imbalances.
His material tendencies show a high comfort level in complex, queenless middlegames and minor-piece imbalances. Defensively, Krivoborodov is remarkably resilient in slightly inferior positions, using active piece play and precise coordination to construct drawing fortresses. In the endgame, he excels in technical conversions, particularly in rook-and-pawn endings, active king maneuvers, and opposite-colored bishop structures. His interest in chess etudes and compositions underpins his sharp tactical awareness in late-stage games.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Krivoborodov's White repertoire is based almost exclusively on 1.e4, favoring systems that lead to concrete positional play with clear strategic plans.
Against the Sicilian Defense, he regularly bypasses main-line open variations in favor of the Alapin Variation (2.c3) or the Rossolimo Attack (3.Bb5).
Against the French Defense, his primary main line is the Winawer Variation, where he welcomes highly complex, double-edged structures.
Against the Caro-Kann Defense, he predominantly employs the Exchange Variation, aiming for long-term positional pressure, or the Advance Variation with a solid setup.
2. As Black
Krivoborodov relies on a structured, theoretically sound Black repertoire, aiming for counterplay without taking excessive structural risks.
Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the Classical Caro-Kann Defense, which he handles with great theoretical precision.
Against 1.d4, his main defensive system is the Slav Defense, utilizing the Chameleon Variation with an early ...a6 to maintain flexibility.
When facing 1.c4 or 1.Nf3, he typically transposes into Slav setups or employs solid Caro-Kann-like defensive systems.
