Ilamparthi Avalpoondurai Ravikumar, known professionally as Ilamparthi A R, is an Indian chess grandmaster born on March 28, 2009. Representing the Indian (IND) federation, he officially gained the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2026. He achieved his career-high FIDE classical rating of 2531 in June 2026. Recognized as one of India's prominent young chess prodigies, he secured the World Under-14 Championship in 2022 and progressed quickly through the national and international open circuits to become India's 90th Grandmaster.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Ilamparthi began playing in competitive tournaments in 2014. He made his first major breakthrough in 2019 at the Delhi GM International, where as a nine-year-old rated 1920, he defeated GM Harsha Bharathakoti in the opening round. Later that year, he won the National Under-9 Open Championship in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
In September 2022, Ilamparthi won the Under-14 Boys section of the World Youth Chess Championship in Mamaia, Romania, finishing with a score of 9.5/11. He secured his International Master (IM) title norms at the Gligoric Memorial in Serbia, the World Youth Championship 2022, and the Sunway Sitges Chess Festival. In February 2023, he crossed the 2400 Elo rating barrier at the 21st Rochefort Chess Festival Masters in France, officially earning the IM title. Later that month, he won the WR Chess Junior Under-14 Boys tournament in Düsseldorf.
His path to the Grandmaster title included the following milestones:
- First GM Norm: November 2023 at the Hanoi GM Round-Robin in Vietnam, where he scored 7/9.
- Second GM Norm: November 2024 at the Singapore International Open.
- Rating Barrier: Crossed the 2500 classical rating threshold during the Rilton Cup 2024–25 in Sweden, reaching a published rating of 2505 in February 2025.
- Third GM Norm: October 2025 at the GM4 Festival šaha "Bijeljina 2025" in Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was officially awarded the Grandmaster title at the 1st FIDE Council 2026.
Among other notable open results, Ilamparthi tied for third place at the Slovakia Chess Open in July 2024 and won the Singh's Gambit Rating Open with a score of 7.5/8 in November 2024. He also won the Wroclaw Chess Festival Open A in Poland in December 2025 with 7/9. He is trained by GM Shyam Sundar M and is a mentee of the WestBridge Anand Chess Academy (WACA), mentored by five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand.
