Overview
Aaryan Varshney (born April 7, 2005) is an Indian chess Grandmaster representing the All India Chess Federation. He officially achieved the Grandmaster title in January 2026, becoming India's 92nd Grandmaster and the eighth from Delhi. Varshney reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2538 in April 2026. He is distinguished as a modern, self-taught professional tournament player, famously securing his GM title without formal academy training or chess books. Instead, his competitive identity is built entirely on collaborative, engine-assisted database and opening preparation with his father.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born and raised in Delhi, India, Varshney began learning chess at age seven. His early chess development was managed entirely at home under the guidance of his single father, Gaurav Varshney, a physics teacher. Sidestepping conventional coaches or academies, his training was heavily software-based, utilizing chess databases to analyze games and construct theoretical baselines.
Varshney's progression through junior and professional ranks is defined by several key milestones:
- 2018: Varshney won the National Under-13 Championship and the IIFL Mumbai Junior Championship. This early success earned him the FIDE Master (FM) title.
- 2019: He achieved his first International Master (IM) norm at the Goa GM International, followed by a second norm at the World Junior Chess Championship in Delhi.
- 2024: After securing his final norm, he was officially awarded the IM title. He also recorded key victories in rapid play, winning both the 2nd Noida Rapid Rating Open and the 1st Dewas Rapid Rating Open.
- August 2025: Varshney scored his first GM norm at the 34th Vasilis Theoridis Open in Kavala, Greece, where he shared second place and defeated five-time Commonwealth champion Abhijeet Gupta.
- October 2025: He crossed the live classical Elo rating threshold of 2500 during the Maharathi International Open.
- November 2025: He captured his second GM norm at the 3rd Leonine GM Round-Robin in Dhaka, Bangladesh, winning clear first place with an unbeaten 7/9 score and a 2603 tournament performance rating.
- December 2025: Varshney dominated the 2nd Bhilwara Rating Open in Rajasthan, India, securing a perfect 9/9 score to finish 1.5 points ahead of the field.
- January 2026: He earned his third and final GM norm by winning the 16th Andranik Margaryan Memorial in Yerevan, Armenia. He clinched the norm with a round to spare after a round-eight draw against FM Tyhran Ambartsumian. He finished clear first with 7/9 points, 1.5 points ahead of the second-place finisher, Russian GM Aleksey Goganov.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Varshney operates as a concrete, computer-era calculator, heavily prioritizing engine-vetted tactical clarity over dogmatic positional play. Given his preparation methods, his style is characterized by intense concrete calculation, forcing deep tactical variations.
In transition from the opening, Varshney is comfortable entering asymmetric, sharp positions. He exhibits strong capability in handling dynamic central structures, often playing actively in isolated queen's pawn (IQP) configurations, where he utilizes piece activity to compensate for long-term structural compromises. His defensive posture is pragmatic, focusing on engine-like resistance rather than passive defense. In endgames, Varshney excels in active piece placement, particularly in transitional rook-and-minor-piece endings where incremental material or spatial advantages can be systematically converted.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Varshney is overwhelmingly a queenside player, using 1.d4 as his primary first-move weapon.
-
Queen's Gambit Declined (Ragozin Defense & Classical Lines): Varshney employs deep theoretical lines in the QGD, frequently steering into the active Ragozin Variation.
-
King's Indian Defense (Orthodox and Positional Lines): Against the King's Indian, Varshney typically opts for principled central expansion and positional strangulation.
-
Slav and Semi-Slav Defense: When Black plays a classical Slav setup, Varshney relies on structured central pressure.
2. As Black
Against both 1.e4 and 1.d4, Varshney favors resilient, hyper-modern, and asymmetric defensive schemes.
-
Ruy Lopez, Berlin Defense: Against 1.e4, the Berlin Defense is a recurring element of Varshney's solid black repertoire.
-
Caro-Kann Defense: He utilizes the Caro-Kann as a sharp counter-attacking system, especially in the Advance Variation.
-
Queen's Gambit Declined (Ragozin Defense): Facing 1.d4, Varshney often relies on the Ragozin to achieve rapid development and early counterplay.
-
Bogo-Indian Defense: Alternatively, he adopts the solid Bogo-Indian setups to contest the e4-square.
