Biography & Major Career Milestones
Lagarde began playing chess at the age of six. He demonstrated early promise in youth championships, finishing as runner-up in the French Youth Championships in the Under-12 division in 2006 and the Under-14 division in 2007. In 2009, he achieved international success by winning the bronze medal in the Under-16 category at the World Youth Chess Championship.
After securing his FM title in 2008 and his IM title in 2011, Lagarde completed his Grandmaster title requirements in 2013. He secured a key GM norm at the 2013 Cappelle-la-Grande Open. His career-high classical rating of 2659, achieved in February 2020, established him in the upper tier of French chess.
His most prominent individual achievement occurred in August 2019, when he won the French Chess Championship in Chartres. After tying for first place in the classical tournament with 6/9, he defeated Laurent Fressinet in the blitz phase of the playoffs to claim the national crown. Additionally, Lagarde won the French Blitz Championship in 2018, 2022 (Port-Marly), and 2025 (Saint-Maur-des-Fossés). Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Lagarde is characterized by a dynamic, energetic, and tactical style. He has a reputation for choosing sharp, non-standard, and double-edged middlegames that require concrete calculations, often aiming to disrupt the opponent's preparation with surprising lines.
In terms of material tendencies, Lagarde is an active piece player who prioritizes the initiative over static defensive values. He utilizes timely pawn breaks to open files and lines for his minor and major pieces, occasionally accepting structural weaknesses such as isolated queen pawns or doubled pawns if they facilitate superior piece coordination.
Defensively, Lagarde is resourceful, frequently relying on tactical counter-punches and complicating the position when under pressure. In the endgame, he is a technically proficient converter, especially in complex rook-and-minor-piece endings. However, his high-risk, concrete style can occasionally lead to time pressure, where miscalculations in volatile positions have resulted in late-game turnarounds in high-stakes team events.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Lagarde maintains a highly versatile opening repertoire as White, frequently shifting between 1.e4, 1.d4, and 1.Nf3 to remain unpredictable.
Against 1...e5, Lagarde has a notable affinity for the Vienna Game and Vienna Gambit, which he deployed in the 2019 French Championship playoffs:
Against the Sicilian Defense, Lagarde often relies on the Closed Sicilian to steer the game away from deeply analyzed open lines while maintaining dynamic attacking chances:
He also employs the Caro-Kann Advance Variation with active kingside expansion:
When playing closed systems, he frequently utilizes hypermodern fianchetto structures, such as the Nimzo-Larsen Attack, to establish flexible development plans:
2. As Black
As Black, Lagarde favors unbalanced, counter-attacking setups that offer realistic winning chances rather than quiet equality.
Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the French Defense, which he plays in its highly sharp and strategic lines:
Against 1.d4, Lagarde is a loyal practitioner of the Nimzo-Indian Defense, where he strives for early counterplay and comfortable piece activity:
