Alongside his active career as a tournament and national team player, Daştan is a medical doctor currently serving as a radiology assistant resident at Bursa Uludağ University Hospital.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Bursa in 1997, Daştan began his competitive chess trajectory in early childhood, securing highly competitive placements in national youth events. His international junior breakthrough occurred in May 2013, when he won the individual gold medal in the Open Under-17 division of the World Schools Chess Championship in Greece with a score of 7.5/9.
His title progression progressed rapidly. Following his FIDE Master title in 2012, he achieved the International Master title in 2013. In 2016, after satisfying all grandmaster norm requirements, FIDE officially conferred upon him the Grandmaster title.
On the open tournament circuit, one of his most notable performances came at the 13th Teplice Open in June 2018, where he tied for first place with a score of 7.0/9 alongside grandmasters Evgeny Romanov, Evgeny Vorobiov, Viktor Erdos, and Christopher Repka.
At the national level, Daştan has consistently contested the Turkish Chess Championship. In the December 2024 edition held in Antalya, he reached the semi-finals before falling to the eventual champion, GM Vahap Şanal. He subsequently won the third-place playoff match to complete the podium.
In August 2025, Daştan delivered a double-gold performance at the 35th NATO Chess Championship held in Dęblin, Poland. Representing the Turkish Armed Forces sports team (TSK Spor Gücü), he won the individual classical tournament with an undefeated score of 6.5/7 and the individual blitz tournament with 9.5/11, leading his team to the overall team championship.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Daştan is a positional, technically solid player who relies on precise, concrete calculation—a hallmark of contemporary computer-era grandmasters. He typically prioritizes king safety and favors structured, clear-cut middle games over highly chaotic, irrational complications.
His handling of space advantages and pawn structures is highly methodical. Daştan displays particular technical competence in maintaining and converting minor strategic pluses. In the endgame phase, his technical mastery is notable, particularly in navigating complex rook-and-pawn endings and managing the strategic intricacies of opposite-colored bishop structures (as demonstrated in his deep technical battles, such as his encounter against GM Dariusz Swiercz at the 2017 European Individual Championship).
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Daştan features a flexible, classical opening repertoire with White, alternating between 1.e4 and 1.d4 depending on the requirements of the specific matchup.
Against 1.e4 e5, Daştan frequently employs the Giuoco Piano or Bishop's Opening setups to establish central control without committing to early tactical vulnerability:
When facing the Caro-Kann, his primary weapon is the Advance Variation, where he seeks a space advantage in the center:
With 1.d4, he steeringly enters Queen's Gambit Declined lines, often choosing the Exchange Variation to establish asymmetric, controllable Carlsbad pawn structures:
Against the Slav structures, he maintains positional pressure using standard developmental plans:
2. As Black
As Black, Daştan favors sharp, asymmetrical counters against 1.e4 and relies on robust, structurally sound defense systems against 1.d4.
Against 1.e4, his main defensive choice is the Sicilian Defense, particularly the Najdorf Variation, which allows him to play for the full point from an asymmetric structure:
He also occasionally employs the Modern Defense to create counter-attacking opportunities:
Against 1.d4, he relies on Indian defense setups or Slav-based structures depending on the White setup:
