Overview

Paweł Teclaf (born June 18, 2003) is a Polish chess Grandmaster who represents the Polish Chess Federation (POL). He officially attained the International Master (IM) title in 2019 and was awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2023. Teclaf reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2586 in August 2023. He is primarily known as a dynamic tournament player and calculations-focused grandmaster, who achieved a major national milestone by winning the Polish Individual Chess Championship in 2025.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Teclaf was born in Kartuzy, Poland, and began playing chess around 2007. He established himself as one of Poland's most successful junior players, winning seven Polish Junior Chess Championship titles in classical chess between 2011 and 2021 across various age groups (U8, U10, U12, U14, U18), as well as six junior rapid and blitz national titles. On the international stage, he won two bronze medals at the World Youth Chess Championships: first in the Under-10 category at Al Ain in 2013, and second in the Under-14 category at Montevideo in 2017.

In 2019, Teclaf was awarded the International Master title. He completed his Grandmaster requirements in 2022, and FIDE officially ratified the GM title in 2023. His path to the GM title included securing norms at the 57th Akiba Rubinstein Chess Festival in Polanica-Zdrój in August 2021, the Szachowy Tydzień w Przeworsku in June 2022, and finally at the 2. GM-Turnier Doppelbauer Kiel in July 2022, where he won first place with 6/9.

In July 2021, Teclaf competed in the FIDE World Cup in Sochi. He drew his classical games 1–1 against the Indian grandmaster D Gukesh before being eliminated in the rapid tiebreak phase. In December 2021, he went viral during the World Blitz Championship in Warsaw. In a game against Tigran L. Petrosian, Teclaf blundered into a mating net and lost his balance, falling backward off his chair. He was widely praised for his composure and sportsmanship as he immediately got back up to shake his opponent's hand.

Teclaf has continued to perform strongly at the elite open and national levels. In April 2025, he won the GM Round Robin group at the 67th Southend Easter Chess Festival with 6.5/9. His most prominent career victory came in May 2025 at the Polish Chess Championship in Krakow, where he finished undefeated and tied for first place on 6.0/9 with Jakub Kosakowski, subsequently winning the rapid playoff 1.5–0.5 to claim the national title.
