Overview
Romain Édouard is a French chess grandmaster born on November 28, 1990, in Poitiers, France. Representing the French Chess Federation (FRA), he earned his International Master (IM) title in 2007 and achieved the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2009. He reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2702 in June 2014, ranking as world No. 44. Highly regarded as a tournament player, team competitor, theoretician, and chess author, Édouard has established a prominent competitive identity both on the board and as an elite trainer, having served as a second for world-class grandmasters including Veselin Topalov.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Romain Édouard began playing chess at the age of five and competed in his first official tournament in 2001. During his youth, he was coached by French Grandmaster Olivier Renet. Édouard's junior career was highlighted by winning the Under-16 European Youth Chess Championship in Herceg Novi, Montenegro, in 2006. The following year, in 2007, he claimed individual silver medals at both the Under-18 European Youth Championship and the Under-18 World Youth Championship. He transitioned rapidly through the titles, securing the IM title in 2007 and fulfilling his final GM norm requirements to earn the Grandmaster title in 2009 at age 18.
In August 2012, Édouard achieved a significant national milestone by jointly winning the French Chess Championship, sharing first place alongside Christian Bauer, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Etienne Bacrot. On the international open circuit, Édouard has accumulated numerous tournament victories. His open and closed tournament titles include Zaragoza (2008), Bad Wiessee (2008), Andorra (2009), Echternach (2009 and 2010), Clermont-Ferrand (2011), Antwerp (2011), and Nancy (2012).
In December 2012, Édouard won the Al Ain Classic, finishing ahead of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on tiebreaks. He recorded one of his most dominant tournament performances at the 2014 Dubai Open, where he scored 8/9 points to finish a clear point ahead of the field. He also shared first place at the 2015 World Open in Arlington, Virginia.
During his peak competitive years in the mid-2010s, Édouard breached the 2700 Elo barrier, joining the "super-grandmaster" tier. He subsequently developed a prominent career as a chess author, editor, and coach. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of Thinkers Publishing and wrote multiple instructional books, including the Chess Calculation Training series and The Chess Manual of Avoidable Mistakes. He acted as a second for Veselin Topalov from 2010 to 2014 and has assisted Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in high-level theoretical preparation.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- Chess Olympiads: Édouard represented France in three consecutive Chess Olympiads, competing in Khanty-Mansiysk (2010), Istanbul (2012), and Tromsø (2014).
- European Team Chess Championships: Represented France at multiple European Team Championships. At the 2013 European Team Chess Championship in Warsaw, Poland, he played on board three, scoring 6/8 points with a 2742 performance rating to win the individual gold medal while helping France secure the team silver medal.
- Club Championships: He has been a regular competitor in the French Top 12 league, playing for Bischwiller (contributing to a second-place finish in 2014) and Clichy. In Spain, he has represented the Club de Ajedrez Sestao.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Édouard's playing style is dynamic, concrete, and highly calculation-oriented. He relies on objective computer-era calculations, a theme central to his training books. Rather than seeking passive safety, Édouard actively strives for the initiative, prioritizing piece activity and space advantages even when it requires accepting structural compromises or sacrificing material.
In terms of material imbalances, Édouard is highly competent in handling the bishop pair and launching direct kingside attacks. He frequently employs positional exchange sacrifices to dismantle his opponent's pawn structure or secure long-term control of key squares. His middlegame play is characterized by a high frequency of concrete pawn breaks, maintaining tension in the center until tactical resolutions arise.
In the endgame, Édouard is highly technical, demonstrating particular strength in rook-and-minor-piece endings and opposite-colored bishop structures. His endgame approach is active; he excels in converting minor positional advantages through precise king activity and tactical defense in technically inferior positions.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Édouard possesses a deep and structured opening repertoire, shaped by his work as an elite second.
1. As White
Édouard primarily initiates games with 1.d4, transposing into Queen's Pawn and Nimzo-Indian structures. When opening with 1.e4, he regularly employs solid, strategically rich lines that minimize early tactical simplifications.
Against the Queen's Gambit Declined, Édouard frequently aims for Catalan setups or classical Ragozin/Harrwitz structures. His typical Ragozin move order is:
Against the Nimzo-Indian, he frequently employs the Three Knights Variation:
When playing 1.e4, Édouard's primary weapon against the Sicilian Defense is the Rossolimo/Canal-Sokolsky Attack, aiming to bypass deep theoretical Najdorf or classical lines in favor of positional structures:
Against the Caro-Kann Defense, Édouard regularly employs the Advance Variation, particularly focusing on the Short Variation:
2. As Black
As Black, Édouard maintains a theoretically demanding, fighting repertoire. Against 1.e4, he employs both the Sicilian and the classical French Defense. Against 1.d4, he has a strong history of playing the Queen's Gambit Accepted. Against 1.c4, he plays an aggressive reversed setup.
Against 1.d4, his main classical defense is the Queen's Gambit Accepted:
Against 1.e4, he frequently relies on the classical French Defense:
Against the English Opening (1.c4), Édouard popularized an aggressive system based on a reversed Grand Prix setup, detailed in his "English Breakfast" repertoire:
