A prominent junior prodigy in the United States during the 2010s, Li established his competitive identity primarily as a strong open tournament player, state champion, and subsequently as an active chess trainer.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Li began playing chess at the age of five in Michigan. After relocating to Texas, his early junior career progressed rapidly. In 2011, he won the Arkansas State Championship. Later that year, he earned the silver medal in the Under-10 section of the World Youth Chess Championship in Caldas Novas, Brazil. In 2012, his early competitive success led to an invitation to join the "Young Stars - Go for the GM" program, an elite training initiative coached by former World Champion Garry Kasparov.
Li completed his Grandmaster title requirements in 2016 through a series of strong performances in open and junior tournaments:
- First GM Norm: Achieved at the 10th Annual Philadelphia Open in March 2016, where he tied for first place with Grandmaster Aleksandar Indjic with a score of 7/9.
- Second GM Norm: Secured in June 2016 at the National Open in Las Vegas, where he finished as co-champion alongside Grandmaster Daniel Fridman with an undefeated 5/6 score, winning the Edmondson Cup on tiebreaks.
- Third GM Norm: Earned by winning the North American Junior U20 Championship in Irving, Texas, in September 2016.
The Grandmaster title was officially ratified by FIDE in early 2017. In May 2018, Li won the 12th Annual Philadelphia Open and hit his peak classical FIDE rating of 2587. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, representing the university's chess team and graduating in 2024 with a degree in Finance.
Elite Team & Event Performance

- Match of the Millennials (2017): Played for the United States Under-17 team in Saint Louis against a selection of top international juniors.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Li’s playing style is typical of computer-era calculators, characterized by concrete tactical awareness and a high comfort level in sharp, double-edged positions. He displays robust defensive resourcefulness in complex tactical skirmishes. In his notable victory against Grandmaster Michael Roiz, Li demonstrated his material imbalances tolerance by sacrificing both rooks to successfully navigate his king safely into the center of the board.
In high-level defensive tasks, Li has shown great resilience. This was highlighted in the 2015 Millionaire Chess Open, where he comfortably equalized and drew against the world-class grandmaster Fabiano Caruana when defending the black side of the Evans Gambit.
