Biography & Major Career Milestones
Zeng grew up in Guangdong, China. In 2006, he represented China at the World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad, playing on the bronze medal-winning Chinese team.
Zeng completed his title norms through major international open and continental performances in Asia and Oceania:
- First IM/GM Norm: Achieved at the 9th Asian Continental Men's Chess Championship in the Philippines in 2010.
- Second IM Norm: Earned at the 9th Delhi International Open Tournament in New Delhi, India, in January 2011.

- Third GM Norm: Achieved at the 6th Sydney International Open in Sydney, Australia, in April 2012.
His Grandmaster title went into effect on March 25, 2013, when his rating surpassed the 2500 threshold following a victory over compatriot Wei Yi in the final round of the 3rd HDBank Cup in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Zeng shared 3rd place in that event (finishing 8th on tiebreaks) with a score of 6.5/9.
Zeng's notable individual achievements in national and international events include:

- FIDE Online Olympiad (2021): Represented the Shenzhen city team in the Top Division (Pool B), playing on Board 1. - Chinese Chess League Division A: Regularly competes in China's top-tier league, playing for various prominent teams, including the Shenzhen team and Pengcheng Chess Club, over multiple seasons.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Zeng plays in a universal and technical style. He is comfortable maneuvering in strategically complex structures, yet possesses deep calculative ability in double-edged middlegames. Zeng frequently utilizes hypermodern structures to transition into positional middlegames where he seeks strategic asymmetry. His defensive identity is characterized by resilience under pressure, often holding marginally worse or structurally compromised positions through active minor piece coordination. In the endgame, he demonstrates precise technique, particularly in converting micro-advantages in rook endings or coordinating active knight-versus-bishop formations.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Zeng's White repertoire is structurally flexible, frequently choosing 1.Nf3, 1.c4, or 1.b3 to bypass deep theoretical preparations.
-
Nimzo-Larsen Attack (A01): Zeng frequently employs the Nimzo-Larsen to create non-standard positions:
-
Catalan and English Openings (A13): In classical structures, Zeng often plays 1.Nf3 or 1.c4, transitioning into Catalan or English lines:
-
Closed Sicilian / Canal-Sokolsky Attack (B52): Against the Sicilian Defense, Zeng often avoids open lines in favor of 2.Nf3 systems or closed formations:
2. As Black
Against both 1.e4 and 1.d4, Zeng prioritizes asymmetric counterplay and solid theoretical foundations.
-
Sicilian Defense (Kan / Taimanov Variations): Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the Sicilian Defense, frequently using the Kan or Taimanov structures for counter-attacking possibilities:
-
Caro-Kann Defense (B12): When seeking a more solid pawn structure against 1.e4, he employs the Caro-Kann Defense:
-
Nimzo-Indian Defense (E36): Against 1.d4, Zeng frequently replies with the Nimzo-Indian to create immediate tension in the center:
