Biography & Major Career Milestones
Mozharov developed his chess foundation in Russia and graduated from the Russian State Social University (RSSU) in Moscow. He achieved early success in national youth events before progressing through the international title ranks. He obtained his International Master title in 2009.
Mozharov's ascent to the Grandmaster title was marked by strong performances in highly competitive Asian open tournaments. In November 2013, he earned a critical GM norm at the Chennai Grandmaster International Open, where he shared the tournament lead at 7.5/9 with Vidit Santosh Gujrathi and Aravindh Chithambaram. In December 2013, he followed this up by sharing first place at the SREI Kolkata International Grandmaster Open.
His Grandmaster title was officially confirmed by FIDE in early 2014 during the 1st Quarter Presidential Board Meeting in Khanty-Mansiysk. Following his title elevation, Mozharov continued to perform strongly on the international open circuit:
- In July 2014, he shared first place at the 34th Benasque International Open in Spain, scoring 7.5/9.

Elite Team & Event Performance
- Russian Team Championship (2014): Represented the Moscow-based club "ShSM-Nashe naslediye". Playing alongside high-level Russian grandmasters, Mozharov contributed to the team securing the silver medal (second place overall) with 11 match points.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Mozharov possesses a universal, positional style that is heavily anchored in concrete computer-era calculation. He displays a deep understanding of space advantages and strategic maneuvering, particularly when controlling the center in closed or semi-open structures. In sharp tactical battles, he demonstrates excellent king safety awareness, often executing proactive defensive maneuvers or counter-attacking with precision when his opponents overextend.
His material tendencies show a strong capability in handling the bishop pair and exploiting minor-piece imbalances. He is comfortable transitioning into queenless middlegames where he can rely on structural advantages, such as an opponent's isolated queen's pawn or pawn weaknesses created in the transition from the opening. In the endgame phase, Mozharov is highly proficient at converting incremental structural advantages. He has demonstrated technical precision in rook-and-pawn endings, maintaining active king placement, and defending theoretically inferior opposite-colored bishop endgames to secure draws against elite grandmaster opposition.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Mozharov's opening repertoire is theoretically dense, characterized by high positional pressure as White and asymmetrical counter-attacking setups as Black.
1. As White
With the white pieces, Mozharov primarily relies on Queen's Pawn games (1.d4) and English Opening systems (1.c4), though he occasionally employs 1.e4 or Reti setups.
Against 1...d5, he frequently leads into the Slav Defense, utilizing the mainlines:
Against 1...Nf6 and 1...e6 setups, he regularly steers the game into Catalan structures, utilizing a kingside fianchetto to apply long-term pressure on the queenside:
When employing 1.e4, Mozharov has utilized the Advance Variation of the Caro-Kann Defense to establish a central space advantage:
2. As Black
As Black, Mozharov seeks dynamic counterplay and asymmetry. Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the Sicilian Defense, with a strong preference for the Taimanov Variation:
Against anti-Sicilian setups, such as the Rossolimo Variation, he handles the resulting doubled-pawn structures with a focus on central play:
Against 1.d4, Mozharov frequently utilizes the Slav Defense, maintaining a highly solid pawn structure while freeing his light-squared bishop early:
