Yannick Gozzoli (born June 2, 1983, in Marseille, France) is an elite French chess grandmaster, trainer, and organizer. He represents the French Chess Federation (FIDE ID: 616915) and holds the titles of Grandmaster (awarded in 2012) and FIDE Senior Trainer (FST). Gozzoli achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2633 in March 2019. A prominent figure in French chess, he is highly regarded as a national champion, a veteran of elite team leagues, and an influential coach who has captained the French women's national team.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Gozzoli grew up in Marseille, where he achieved early success by winning the French Under-20 Championship in 2002. He was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 2003 and completed his Grandmaster (GM) requirements in 2012.
Over his career, Gozzoli has established a strong presence in the French Chess Championship. At the 91st French Chess Championship in Agen (2016), he emerged as a leader in the early rounds and finished as the national runner-up. At the 93rd French Chess Championship in Nîmes (2018), Gozzoli tied for first place alongside Tigran Gharamian and Romain Édouard with a score of 6/9, ultimately taking third place after the rapid and blitz playoff.
Gozzoli achieved a major career peak at the 95th French Chess Championship in Alpe d'Huez (2023), where he secured his maiden national title. In a grueling 16-player knockout tournament, Gozzoli won narrow tiebreak matches against Anthony Wirig and Joseph Girel (the latter decided in an Armageddon game) before defeating Tigran Gharamian in the semi-finals. In the final, he drew the first game against Romain Édouard and won the second game to secure the national championship.
Alongside his competitive career, Gozzoli is a leading coach in France. He captained the French Women's National Team at the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai in 2022 and regularly trains France's elite youth players at international championships. He is also active as an organizer, having run the Pasino Grand Aix / Dole Trophy open tournament.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- French Team Chess Championship (Top 12 / Top 16): Gozzoli won the national club championship in 2011 with Marseille-Échecs alongside teammate Étienne Bacrot. He has also represented other premier French clubs, including L'Échiquier du Roy René (Aix-en-Provence) and Mulhouse Philidor.
- FIDE Online Chess Olympiad (2021): Represented France and played several critical matches, including drawing his game against India's GM Vidit Gujrathi (2726).
- Mitropa Cup (2023): Competed on the French squad in Mali Lošinj, Croatia, entering as one of the highest-rated players in the tournament.
- European Chess Club Cup: Represented French club teams in multiple editions, including 2011, 2019, and 2023.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Gozzoli is primarily a positional and schematic player who excels in structural health, piece coordination, and concrete endgame conversion. Rather than driving games toward tactical chaos, his style relies on accumulating small, low-risk advantages and maintaining a high level of defensive resilience. He has frequently emphasized that he prioritizes verbal, concept-driven strategic planning over purely tactical, engine-style lines.
His handling of space and pawn structures is highly classical. In the endgame, Gozzoli demonstrates precise technical skills, particularly in rook endings. His title-winning game against Romain Édouard in the 2023 French Championship was decided by his methodical conversion of an equal rook-and-pawn endgame. As a FIDE Senior Trainer, his pedagogical work focuses heavily on technical endgame archetypes, such as rook endings, king activity, and converting structural advantages.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Gozzoli's opening choices are classical, solid, and structurally robust.
1. As White
With the White pieces, Gozzoli primarily employs closed queen's pawn structures, starting with 1.d4, 1.c4, or 1.Nf3. He frequently transposes into Catalan setups, the Queen's Gambit Declined (QGD), and the Slav or Semi-Slav defenses to establish long-term positional pressure.
- Queen's Gambit Declined (Three Knights Variation): A central weapon in Gozzoli's white repertoire, leading to slow, maneuvering games.
- Slav Defense (Modern / Alapin Variation): Gozzoli regularly meets the Slav Defense with mainlines designed to maintain a stable spatial advantage.
- English Opening / King's Indian Attack: Against various black setups, Gozzoli often plays the English or Reti.
2. As Black
As Black, Gozzoli favors symmetrical open games against 1.e4 and relies on solid, reliable setups like the Slav and King's Indian systems against 1.d4.
- Ruy Lopez: Gozzoli's primary defense against 1.e4 is 1...e5, often opting for the Morphy Defense in the Ruy Lopez.
- Slav Defense: Against 1.d4, he employs the solid Slav Defense, seeking counterplay in classical pawn structures.
- Alekhine's Defense: A frequent practical weapon utilized by Gozzoli to unbalance the game against 1.e4.
